Samuel Elmer and Elizabeth Canfield

Samuel Elmer was born 20 September 1732 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts to Hezekiah Elmer and Miriam Janes. In the Elmer-Elmore Genealogy, it states, "He is said to have lived with Simeon Alexander in Northfield in 1753, where he probably married, and removed soon after to Granby, Mass. He remained there and in South Hadley, Mass., until about 1770, pursuing his trade of blacksmithing, to which his sons were brought up, and then removed with his family to Ashfield, Mass., where he bought 400 acres of land, and they all went to farming. Gad, however, continued to work at his trade until his death."

Samuel married Elizabeth Canfield 25 October 1753 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Elizabeth was the daughter of Nathaniel Canfield and Elizabeth Lankton. Elizabeth died in 1809 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.

Samuel married second Sarah Smith. Sarah was born 24 August 1738 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts to Chileab Smith and Sarah Moody. She had married first Nathaniel Harvey (marriage intention 19 Apr 1759 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts) and second Israel Standish (marriage intention Nov 1794 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts).

Samuel died in 1818 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Sarah died about 1830 (age 92). Samuel, Elizabeth, and Sarah are said to have been buried next to each other in Ashfield.

He was a natural mathematician...and able to solve any problem, that the inquisitive pedagogue had the inclination to offer...The young and old sought his counsel, as well as to share the richly stored knowledge he possessed. He was a great reader, and it was said he never forgot a thing worth remembering. When he began to converse, he would always say how limited was our knowledge to what the human intellect was capable of, and would speak often of the attainments we should make in the future life...His knowledge of the Bible was very thorough, so much so that he was known as the 'Concordance.' There was not a passage of Scripture that he was not familiar with and could turn to readily. He was a Baptist, as were most of his descendants...Venerable Doctors of Divinity would visit him, for his opinion on Bible expositions...He was thoroughly orthodox and often spoke of the masterly love of God, in the redemption of the world...a small man in stature, but very active, never requiring more than four or five hours sleep in the twenty-four." Biographical Sketches of Richard Ellis

Pages 96-98:
(42.) EBENEZER SMITH, Jr., fifth child of Elder Ebenezer and Remember Ellis Smith, was born in Ashfield, April 1st, 1766, and died in Cassadaga, Chautauqua Co., N. Y., May 24th, 1855 aged 89 years.

He married Keziah Elmer, or Elmore, of Ashfield about 1791, and had seven children. She died in Cassadaga, March 17th, 1870, aged 93 years. The Elmers were one of the early families in the settlement of Ashfield. Mr. Wilson Elmer, a nephew of Keziah, died there in 1885 an aged man. For his second wife he married Mrs. Amanda Ranney Richmond, widow of Elijah Richmond, an enterprising citizen of Ashfield, who died about 1850. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer were married about 1875, and lived a short distance easterly from the old church at Baptist-corners, the Chileab Smith neighborhood. Mrs. Elmer died in 1884. She was a daughter of Jesse Ranney, who raised his family on the old farm of Reuben Ellis,

Ebenezer, Jr., moved with his family from Ashfield to Chautauqua Co., N. Y., in Oct. 1815. Several families from the Ellis neighborhood in Ashfield went with them, namely: Philip Phillips, Israel Smith and Daniel Whitmore. This was just about the close of the war of 1812 and the country was very new and the roads bad. They were over a month on the way from Ashfield. Mr. Smith purchased wild lands, made a clearing and built a log house. He was a farmer by occupation and a scholarly man. His knowledge of the Bible was very thorough, so much so that he was known as the "Concordance." There was not a passage of Scripture that he was not familiar with and could turn to readily. He was a Baptist, as were most of his descendants.

His children were Aaron, born 1792; Quartus, 1796; Fidelia, 1798; Gerry, 1803; Rebecca, 1808; Ebenezer and Keziah (twins,) 1813.

Of Aaron Smith, it was said that he was a great Bible student. He was a farmer, but gave considerable attention to the genealogy of the Smith family. He had recorded the names of over 11,000 of his kin. It was said of him that "he knew more and had forgotten fewer names and dates than any man of his times." He resided most of his life at Stockton, where he died Sept. 23d, 1876, aged 84 years. His children were Laurilla, born 1821, died 1825; Lucretia, born 1824, died 1825; Laura, 1826; Lucy, born 1828, married a Griffith, and died 1880; Pamelia, born 1830, died 1840; Cyrus, born 1831, died 1877; Milla, 1834; William, 1837; Caroline, 1839; Aaron, Jr., 1843. The last named lives at Burnhams, Chautauqua Co., N. Y.

Quartus Smith, born 1796, lived many years in Stockton, N. Y., and died in 1880. He married Pomilla Shepard. They had no children.

Fidelia Smith, born 1798, and died 1840. She married Elijah Wood, and had five children: Fidelia, who married Dr. Alonzo P. Phillips, of Fredonia, Chautauqua Co., N. Y. Ursula, who married James Rheem, and had three children — two dead and one now living, Mr. Charles Rheem, in Oshkosh, Wis. Mrs. Ursula Wood Rheem married for her second husband Albert G. Blakeslee, and they lived in Dequoin, Ill. Elijah married Jane McGregor. Livonia married a Goulding and afterwards Erastus Bowen. Her son, Charles L. Goulding, lives at Fredonia, N. Y.

Gerry Smith, born 1803, lived most of his life in Stockton, where he died July 16, 1882. He married Louisa Ellis, a daughter of Barzillia Ellis, Jr., of Chautauqua Co., N. Y. Their children are Hiram, William, Frank, Flora, and David.

Rebecca Smith, born 1808, married Freeman Richardson in 1830. In 1854 they removed to LaCrosse, Wis., where Mrs. R. now lives. Mr. Richardson died in 1868. Their children were: Melissa, died in 1876; Matilda, Jasper, Squire, and Florilla. The last-named married Wm. Gear, and now resides in LaCrosse and has three children, Elsie, Ella, and Edna Gear. Mrs. Rebecca Richardson now lives with her daughter, Mrs. Gear.

Ebenezer Smith, born in 1813, died in Chatauqua Co. in 1835, unmarried.

Keziah Smith, born 1813, twin-sister of the above, married Arunah Richardson, brother of Freeman Richardson. Their children were Eliza Ann, who married John Carpenter, and lives at Cassadaga, Chautauqua Co., N.Y. Lovina, married Albert Irons; she lives at Cassadaga. "Dear Cousin: I sit down to inform you of our welfare. We are all well as usual. It is a general time of health here...My father and mother are quite old and feeble. Father doesn't labor any; his memory is very good for so old a man; he lives with his youngest daughter; he will be 85 next month.
...
Believe me your affectionate relative,

                                                                    AARON SMITH.
To Dea. Ziba Smith, of Ashfield.

Of Ebenezer Smith, Jr., second son of Elder Ebenezer, and Remember (Ellis) Smith, and his descendants, an acquaintance writes as follows:

"They all lived in my native town of Stockton. Ebenzer, Jr., was a self-educated man, could calculate an eclipse with accuracy. He was a natural mathematician [like his sister Jemima, see page 92], and able to solve any problem, that the inquisitive pedagogue had the inclination to offer. Venerable Doctors of Divinity would visit him, for his opinion on Bible expositions. He was greatly afflicted with rheumatism, for more than twenty of his last years. He was a small man in stature, but very active, never requiring more than four or five hours sleep in the twenty-four. The young and old sought his counsel, as well as to share the richly stored knowledge he possessed. He was a great reader, and it was said he never forgot a thing worth remembering. When he began to converse, he would always say how limited was our knowledge to what the human intellect was capable of, and would speak often of the attainments we should make in the future life. He was thoroughly orthodox and often spoke of the masterly love of God, in the redemption of the world. His daughter, Keziah, tenderly cared for the aged couple. He was, in his time, the most noted man in Ashfield, and was the champion of the Baptists for many years in that town. In 1774 he printed a pamphlet of 18 pages, entitled "An Answer to the many Slanderous Reports Cast on the Baptists at Ashfield, wherein is Shown the First Rise and Growth of the Baptist Church there, together with the Sufferings they Passed Through." This work was in the possession of one of hisdescendants, Mrs. Rebecca Smith Richardson, of North LaCrosse, Wis. Mr. Smith died in 1800. Lyon Memorial

Pages 269-270:
AARON LYON
OF STURBRIDGE, MASS.
The parentage of Aaron Lyon† of Sturbridge is uncertain. He must have been born about 1730. Gould Lyon of Ashford, Conn., No. 82, had a son Aaron, born in 1746. It would not be strange if his brother Seth, No. 81, had also an Aaron. The record of his family appears to be incomplete and there might easily have been a son Aaron, born in 1730. See page 56. The names of Aaron's children below, however, do not repeat otherwise those of the families either of Seth or of Gould. Samuel Lyon (No. 32) has only two children recorded. It is possible, but not very likely, that Aaron was his son, the names Jonathan and Thankful occurring among his kin. If family names are to be taken as a guide, however, it is rather to the family of Richard Lyon of Fairfield that one must turn. Nathan, Stephen, Jonathan, David and Jabez all have a familiar sound to one who knows the Fairfield family. It has been asserted that an uncle of Mary Lyon (No. 2367) came to Ashfield from Guilford, Conn. This would have been a son, however, of the Aaron under discussion, so that the writer is not inclined to attach much importance to the statement, for which documentary evidence is lacking. After all, the same names are found also among the descendants of William Lyon in Windham County, and, in absence of positive knowledge of any migration from Fairfield county to the vicinity of Woodstock, the probability remains in favor of the hypothesis that Aaron was of the Woodstock branch of the family of William Lyon. In particular note the occurrence of the names Stephen, Aaron, Jonathan and Jabez among the grandchildren of William, No. 11.
tThe number 2860 has been arbitrarily assigned to Aaron Lyon of Sturbridge, who is assumed to be of the fifth generation, whether descended from William or from one of the other old New England families. It Is of course possible that he may have descended from a more recent immigrant.

Aaron Lyon married in Sturbridge, Dec. 6, 1753, Mary Mason, daughter of and Hepzibeth (Morse) Mason, born in Dedham, Sept. 12, 1732; died in Ashfield, Mass., June 23, 1815. [Note that the name Hepzibeth among Aaron's children is here accounted for.] Aaron Lyon came to Ashfield in 1764, and Joined the Congregational Church there by letter from Sturbrldge. In 1767, however, he united with the Baptist Church under Elder Ebenezer Smith.

Aaron Lyon served In the Colonial wars. He belonged to Captain Paine's company and was wounded May 15, 1746, In an encounter with Indians near Fort No. 4. He took no active part in the military operarations during the Revolution but he was one of three persons appointed in 1777 to report what action should be taken to suppress expressions of Tory sympathy. Nine prominent residents of Ashfleld were named by them as "enemies of their country, who should be brought to immediate trial."

2352. VI. 2350. NATHAN5 LYON [Aaron*] was born in Sturbridge, Mass., Feb. 24, 1766. He enlisted from Ashfield for service in the Revolution, being private in Lieut. Samuel Bartlet's company at the Lexington alarm; was in expedition to Quebec. In 1776, in the same company with his brother Stephen; served three months, 1776-77, marching to Ticonderoga, and again In 1777 was with his brother Stephen at the battle of Bennington. He settled at Baptist Corner near Ashfield. Nothing has been learned of his later history. [The name Nathan Lyon is met with (about 1800) in Westport, Mass.]

History of Chautauqua County, New York

Pages 568-569:
Ebenezer Smith, Jr., from Mass., in the fall of 1816, settled on the west side of Cassadaga creek, 2 m. below the lake, on lot 6. He came in company with David Whittemore and Philip Phillips grandfather of the Messrs. Phillips, now at Cassadaga. His family consisted of himself, wife, four sons, and three daughters. They moved with two yoke of oxen on one wagon. He moved in with Jeduthan Smith, a relative, till a cabin of rudest style was built. It was roofed with rafters, with poles called ribs, running crosswise, on which rough shingles four feet long, rived out of pine trees, were laid; and probably, as was usually done, without being nailed, but fastened with heavy poles, called “weight-poles” laid across. Succeeding the “cold summer,” grain was scarce and high; his wheat costing $2 per bushel, and corn $1; and his cattle were wintered on browse. His children were Aaron, Quartus, Fidelia, Gerry, Rebecca, Ebenezer, and Kezia, all of whom attained the age of majority, and all came to Stockton. The daughters were married, as follows: Fidelia to Elijah Woods; Rebecca to Freeman Richardson; Kezia to Arunah Richardson.

Gravestone of Esther (Elmer) Bacon     Gravestone of Esther (Elmer) Bacon, next to a possible unmarked child's stone
Notes on findagrave:
"Wife of Levi Bacon
Buried next to small unmarked child's stone.
Tombstone is on the Podunk Nature Reserve.

According to town records she is buried in what is known as the "Purdy Lot" but no one else is listed as being buried there. Although other records report a "daughter at her side".
Lot no 42 in the 1st division, south of the town Road No. 43. It's very remote.

GPS Coordinates are close but not exact. The area is densely forested and full of wonderful cellar holes."

Notes on findagrave:
"Husband of Esther Bacon
Veteran of the Revolutionary War.
Ae. 74 years

Grave is extremely remote.
GPS coordinates are close, but not perfect.

Town Record has it listed as on Lot No. 44 in the 1st Division. His monument may be found a few rods west of the Brook near the north side of the Lot.

Be careful if you do approach grave. Hornets live at base.

Death certificate has him listed as being buried on "On Masion [sic] Farm"
handwriting is unclear. "

From the Bacon Families Association Quarterly Vol 7 no 3 April 1988: Submitted by Robert L Bacon of East Thetford, VT who says "In searching for
our ancestors, brother Arthur and I visited the "Roots Cellar" in Montpelier and copied all the Bacon vital records located there. These are [published] in 4 groups: 1760-1870, 1871-1908, 1909-1941 and 1942-1954 (later records are at present in Burlington) Most of the records were hand-written with some entries practically undecipherable.
