William Hyde
The origin and parentage of William Hyde is not currently known with any certainly. Secondary Internet sources link him to Robert and Beatrice (Calverly) Hyde, stating, "This is the line as given in Ormerod's History of Cheshire, and this Robert's son William is the one given in Burke's Landed Gentry as the William Hyde who came to New England. E. E. W." However, neither Ormerod nor Burke link this family to our William Hyde. Walworth, in his Hyde Genealogy states, "William Hyde (1) the first of Norwich, was a cotemporary of Sir Robert Hyde and of the Earl of Clarendon; but was undoubtedly of humbler origin. I have not been able to ascertain from what part of England he came; to what family he belonged; or where he first landed in this country, or the precise time when he arrived here."
Both Walworth and Abell, in their genealogies, theorized that William may have come to America with Rev. Thomas Hooker in 1633 (though Filby believed that he came in 1636) and settled in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. In 1636, William settled in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut with Hooker, where William was an original proprietor and an early member of the First Church. He owned land there until 1639, and then removed to Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut. William was one of the original proprietors of Norwich, New London, Connecticut, settling there about 1659-60. According to Walworth, "William Hyde was a man of considerable importance among the settlers of Norwich, and was frequently elected as one of the townsmen, or selectmen."
William married first -- --. Her name is not known but she would certainly have been the mother of Samuel and Hester.
William married second Joanna -- (the widow of Robert Abell; for more information, see the page for Robert Abell and Joanna --) 4 June 1667 in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts. William's granddaughter Margaret Post would later marry Joanna's son Caleb in 1669.
William died 6 January 1681 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut. He was called "William Hide Senior" in the Norwich records.
William’s children are:
- Samuel Hyde, born about 1637 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut (according to Walworth), married Jane Lee (dau. of Thomas Lee and -- Brown) in Jun 1659 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, settled in Norwich, New London, Connecticut in 1660, died in 1677. Their son John married Experience Abell, daughter of Caleb and Margaret.
- Hester Hyde, married John Post (bp. 13 Sep 1629 in Otham, Kent, England, s. of Stephen and Elinor (Panton) Post, died 27 Nov 1710 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, buried in the Old Norwichtown Cemetery, Norwich, New London, Connecticut, one of the first settlers of Norwich, New London, Connecticut in 1660, listed in the patent for the town of Norwich 21 May 1685) 31 Mar 1652 in Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut, died 13 Nov 1703 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.
- Possibly a William Hide. As William Hyde was called "Senior" in Norwich records of his death, this may indicate that there he had a son named William. Be aware, however, that sometimes in this era, a person could be called Senior when there was another person of the same name in their family or locality. Therefore, it is not absolutely certain that William had a son William.

Family Histories
I. William Hyde (1) the first, of Norwich, is not certainly known to have been connected with any of the Hyde families who came to this country from England, of which there were several in the United States.
...
The name of William Hyde (1), first appears at Hartford, Conn., in 1636. And his name is on the monument in the old cemetery at that place as one of the original settlers ; and he had lands assigned to him there.
Many families of the name of Hyde had been settled in different parts of England for five or six hundred years prior to the settlement of New England. One of the name, Sir Nicholas Hyde, was chief justice of the court of King's Bench in 1626 ; another. Sir Robert Hyde, was chief justice of the court of common pleas in 1660. And a third, Sir Edward Hyde, afterwards the Earl of Clarendon, was lord chancellor at the restoration, 1660 ; and was the grandfather of Queen Mary the 2d, and Queen Ann, and of Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury, who was one of the provincial governors of New York.
William Hyde (1) the first of Norwich, was a cotemporary of Sir Robert Hyde and of the Earl of Clarendon; but was undoubtedly of humbler origin. I have not been able to ascertain from what part of England he came; to what family he belonged; or where he first landed in this country, or the precise time when he arrived here. He probably, however, came over in 1633, with the Rev. Thomas Hooker, the first minister of Hartford ; sojourned a short time at Newton, Mass., and removed with him to Hartford, in 1636. The time of his removal to Saybrook, is not ascertained, but he owned lands in Hartford as late as 1639. He probably went to Saybrook soon after that, and his dau. was m. there early in 1652. No information has been obtained as to the name of his wife, or when or where she died. From the age of the son when he died (forty), he must have been b. in 1636. His mother was of course then living, and probably died at Hartford or Saybrook, before the removal of her husband to Norwich; as no account of her death is found upon the Norwich records. The daughter either was born in England, or was married very young ; the date of her birth, or her age at the time of her death in 1708, have not been ascertained.
Norwich was settled in 1660. The 35 original proprietors of that town were the Rev. James Fitch, the first minister of that place; Major John Mason, afterwards Lieut. Gov. of Connecticut ; Lieut. Thomas Leffingwell ; Lieut. Thomas Tracy, and his eldest son, John Tracy; Deacon Thomas Adgate ; Christopher Huntington, and his brother, Deacon Simon Huntington ; Ensign Thomas Waterman ; William Hyde, and his son, Samuel Hyde, and his son-in-law, John Post ; Thomas Post ; Lieut. William Backus, and his brother, Stephen Backus ; Deacon Hugh Calkins, and his son, John Calkins, and his son-in-law, Jonathan Royce ; John Reynolds; Thomas Bliss ; Francis Griswold ; John Birchard ; Robert Wade ; Morgan Bowers ; John Gager ; Thomas Howard ; Dr. John Olmstead ; Nehemiah Smith ; Richard Edgerton ; John Elderkin ; John Bradford ; Thomas Bingham ; Robert Allen ; John Baldwin, and John Pease. Most of these original proprietors of Norwich were from Saybrook, and East Saybrook (now Lyme). Hugh Calkins, and his son and son-in-law, and John Pease, John Gager, Nehemiah Smith, and Robert Allen, were from New London. Thomas Waterman, and John Bradford, were from Marshfield, Mass.
William Hyde was a man of considerable importance among the settlers of Norwich, and was frequently elected as one of the townsmen, or selectmen. He d. at Norwich 6 January, 1681. His home lot was devised to his grandson, William Hyde (6) the second. And a part of it was owned by William Mansfield, a descendant of the latter ; and was occupied by him as the site of his dwelling-house in 1859.
The children of William Hyde were :
2. Samuel, b. about 1637, at Hartford, m. Jane Lee.+
3. Hester, b. prob. in England, m. John Post.+
SECOND GENERATION.
II. Samuel Hyde (2), born at Hartford, Conn., about 1637, only son of the first William Hyde of Norwich, m. in June, 1659, Jane Lee of East Saybrook (now Lyme).
She was the dau. of Thomas Lee and Brown, his wife.
[This Thomas Lee came from England in 1641, with his wife and three children. He d. on the passage; and his widow and children came to Saybrook. The first Thomas Lee of Lyme was a brother of Jane, wife of this Samuel Hyde. And Sarah Lee, who m. John Large of Lyme, and settled on Long Island, was their sister.]
Samuel Hyde (2) and his wife came to Norwich in 1660. Their eldest dau., Elizabeth, born in August of that year, was the first white child born in Norwich. He was a farmer, and had lands assigned to him at Norwich West Farms, where he d. in 1677, at the age of 40 years. And John Birchard became the guardian of his children, who were all minors at that time. The date of his wife's death is not ascertained.
Their children were :
4. Samuel, b. in May, 1665, at Norwich, m. Elizabeth Calkins.+
5. John, b. in Dec, 1667, at Norwich, m. Experience Abel.+
6. William, b. in Jan., 1670, at Norwich, m. Anne Bushnell.+
7. Thomas, b. in July, 1672, at Norwich, m. Mary Backus.+
8. Jabez, b. in May, 1677, at Norwich, m. Elizabeth Bushnell.+
9. Elizabeth, b. in Aug., 1660, at Norwich, m. Lieut. Richard Lord.+
10. Phebe, b. in Jan., 1663, at Norwich, m. Matthew Griswold.+
11. Sarah, b. in Feb., 1675, d. the same year.
II. Hester (Esther) Hyde (3), the daughter of William Hyde the first of Norwich, was probably b. in England. She m. in March, 1652, at Saybrook, John Post, b. about 1627, in Eng., son of Stephen Post, who was at Newtown 1634, removed to Hartford 1636, and d. 16 Aug., 1659, at Saybrook [Stephen Post had three sons and one dau. John who m. Hester Hyde; Thomas who m., 1, Mary Andrews, and 2, Rebecca Bruen of Norwich ; Abraham who m. and remained at Saybrook ; and Catherine whom., 1649, Alexander Chalker of Saybrook.] John Post and wife settled at Saybrook, where their four eldest children were born. They removed to Norwich in 1660. His home lot was on the opposite side of the street from that of his father-in-law, William Hyde, and was, in 1858, in the possession of two of his descendants, the widow, Lucretia Carew, and her daughter, the widow of Roswell Morgan, Esq. Mr. Post was an active, influential man in the town. His wife d. at Norwich, 13 November, 1703. He survived her, and d. there 10 February, 1711, aged 83, and is buried in the old cemetery near the church at Norwich Town.
Their children were:
13. John, b. 12 April, 1657, at Saybrook, m. Sarah Reynolds.+
14. Samuel, b. 8 March, 1668, at Norwich, m. Ruth Lathrop.+
15. Margaret, b. 21 Feb., 1653, at Saybrook, m. Caleb Abel.+
16. Elizabeth, b. 22 Feb., 1655, at Saybrook. I have not been able to trace her further. She probably died unmarried.
17. Sarah, b. 6 Nov., 1659, at Saybrook, m. Capt. John Hough.+
18. Mary, b. , 1662, at Norwich, m. Nathaniel Rudd.+
19. Abigail, b. 6 Nov., 1664, at Norwich, d. in April, 1676.
20. Hannah, b. Oct., 1671, at Norwich. She probably died unm.
21. Lydia, b. 11 March, 1674, at Norwich. She m., 1, Abel Moore of New London, and 2, Joseph Harris of New London, and probably died s. p.
What renders it almost certain that three of the seven daughters of Hester Hyde and John Post must have died previously to 18 of Jan., 1686, and probably unmarried, is that by a deed of that date, upon the Windham records, it appears that William Hyde willed to the daughters of his only daughter, Hester Post, certain lands in Windham. That a controversy arose between the eldest son of her brother and the devisees, in relation to the validity of this will ; and that a compromise took place between him and the three sons-in-law of Hester Hyde and John Post;
Caleb Abel, John Hough, and Nathaniel Rudd. And by their deed the latter three conveyed, to the said oldest son of Samuel Hyde the first, one-half of the lands in dispute, in compromise of his claim. And no mention is made of any other granddaughters of the testator, as being in existence, to make any claim to the lands under the will devising the same to the daughters of the testator's daughter, Hester Post.
