Sir John Mainwaring and Katherine Honford
Sir John Mainwaring was born about 1471 and was of Over Peover, Cheshire, England, the son of John Mainwaring and Maud Legh. Sir John married first Katherine Honford. Katherine was the daughter of John Honford and Margaret Savage.
Sir John was knighted 25 September 1513 at Tournai, Hainaut (in what is now Belgium), meaning that he was probably present at the Battle of the Spurs (also called the Battle of Guinegate). He was the Sheriff of Flintshire (Wales) in 1507-9 (23 & 24 Henry VII) and 1514-5 (6 Henry VIII).
Sir John died in March 1515/6. Katherine died in 1529. Sir John and Katherine were both buried at St. Lawrence Church, Over Peover, Cheshire, England. Their memorial, a plaque made of alabaster, shows the couple and their fifteen children.
Sir John's will was dated 4 March 1515/6 and proved 18 November 1516. His bequests includes his black velvet gown guard with cloth of gold to be given for the use of the parish priest of Over Peover, money towards a new stone steeple (evidently, not put to use), money for an honest priest to pray for his soul for four years, and an annual sum of money to his illegitimate brother, Charles. Katherine and a number of children were also included in the will.
Sir John and Katherine’s children are (all appear on the parents' memorial):
- Sir Randall Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will, born about 1495, married 1) Elizabeth Brereton (dau. of Sir Randle Brereton and Eleanor Dutton, widow of Richard Cholmondeley) and second Elizabeth Leycester (dau. of Sir Raufe and Ellin (Leigh) Leycester of Toft, Cheshire, England, m. 2) Sir Edmund Trafford) in 1552 (6 Edward VI), died 6 Sep 1557.
- Edmund Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will, died without issue.
- John Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will, died without issue.
- Piers Mainwaring, appears as Peter on his parents' memorial (the name Piers being a variation of Peter), mentioned in his father's will, died without issue.
- Philip Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will, married Anne Leycester (dau. of Ralph Leycester of Toft, Cheshire, England, d. 1587, will dated 29 Jan 1586 and proved 27 Apr 1587), suceeded his brother Randall as the lord of Over Peover, died 11 Apr 1573, will dated 7 Jan 1572 and proved 28 (month illegible) 1573, buried with Anne at St. Lawrence Church, Over Peover, Cheshire, England.
- Edward Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will and his brother Philip's will, married Alice de Boghey (granddau. of Humphrey de Boghey, of Whitmore, Biddulph, and Oteley, Staffordshire and Brombourough, Cheshire), of Whitmore, Staffordshire, England (which came into his possession through his wife, the sole heiress of her grandfather), died in 1586, buried with Alice and St. Mary and All Saints Church, Whitmore, Staffordshire, England.
- Robert Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will, married -- --.
- Thomas Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will.
- George Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will and his brother Philip's will.
- Henry Mainwaring, mentioned in his father's will, married -- --, died before 11 Apr 1573 (when he was mentioned as deceased in his brother Philip's will).
- Nicholas Mainwaring.
- William Mainwaring, died young.
- William Mainwaring.
- Margaret Mainwaring, mentioned in her father's will, married -- Wilbraham, died before 11 Apr 1573 (when she was mentioned as "my Late sister" in her brother Philip's will).
- Katharine Mainwaring, mentioned in her father's will, married William Newton (son of Homfrey Newton of Pownall, Wilmslow, Cheshire, England) about 1521. A window in the church at Wilmslow, Cheshire, England bears (or bore--I am unsure if the window is still there) the combined arms of Newton and Mainwaring and an inscription in Latin: "Pray for William Newton esquire the son of Humphrey Newton and Ellen his wife and Katherine the wife of the aforesaid William the daughter of John Mainwaring of Peover knight."
