John Smith and Anne --

John Smith was the son of John Smith and Margaret --. John married Anne --. His will was made 16 June 1542 and proved 10 October 1542. He was residing at that time at Erwarton, Suffolk, England.

John was buried in the church at Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England, according to the 1586 will of his son William. William requested that a brass be set in the church that noted that he was buried there with his father John, grandfather John Smith, great-grandfather William Smith, and great-great-grandfather John Smith. The brass was placed but an extra generation was inserted. Myrtle Stevens Hyde confirmed that the line noted by William in the will was correct.

John and Anne’s children are:

  1. William Smith, probably died without issue as the lands left to him in his father's will were later bequeathed in brother Philip's will, will made 27 May 1586 and proved 13 Jul 1586, gentleman of Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England, buried in the church of Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England (in accordance with his wishes in his will to be buried with his ancestors there).
  2. Philip Smith, married 1) Joan -- (bur. 28 July 1585 in Erwarton, Suffolk, England) and 2) Katherine --, buried 23 Mar 1589/90 in Erwarton, Suffolk, England, will made 22 Mar 1587/8 and proved 25 Mar 1590 and again in 13 Nov 1591, a yeoman.
  3. Margaret Smith, named in her father's will.
  4. Anne Smith, named in her father's will.
  5. Joan Smith, named in her father's will.
