The Müller Family

While the parents of Margaretha Mueller are not known and the possibility exists that she could have come from another colony, her father more likely came from one of two families living in Leichtling. Here is what is known from the Leichtling First Settlers List and1798, 1834, and 1850 censuses:

In the original settlers’ list for Leichtling, one Georg Müller of Seligenstadt, Germany (age 28 in 1767) is listed with his wife Anna Margaretha Frank (age 35) and son Johann Paul Müller (age 1). This family does not show up in subsequent records. The family may have moved away or died without issue.

There is also a Franz Miller, wife Anna Maria Schnellbecher, and daughter Sarah listed in the original settlers’ list. However, this family has been shown to be the Mehler family.

In the 1834 census, there is a family of orphans—Andreas Müller and his sisters Elisabeta and Katerina. It is uncertain how these orphans are connected to the other Müllers in Leichtling. The 1850 census shows that Andreas died between the two censuses and left only a daughter, Anna Maria. Therefore, he is not a candidate as Margaret’s ancestor.

Further study of the 1798 census reveals three Müller families in Leichtling—Johann Adam Müller and wife Magdalena Schneider (with daughter Barbara), Johann Georg Müller and wife Katerina Stenger, and Christian Müller and Margareta Keil. No further record can be found of Johann Adam’s family in Leichtling. They do not appear in either the 1834 or the 1850 censuses.

The families of Johann Georg and Christian both appear in the later censuses. Therefore, Margaretha was the descendant of either Johann Georg and Katerina or of Christian and Margareta. Below are the known genealogies of the two candidate families, based off of the First Settlers List and censuses. No birthplaces or places of death are known but it is assumed most were born in Leichtling.

The exact date of Margaretha’s birth is not known but looking at what is known about her children’s births, her father would have been born in the first half of the 19th century, so all those in that time period with no known reason for exclusion from the list of potential fathers are underlined.

There is no Margareta Keil of the right age on the First Settlers List. However, there is a Nikolaus Keil, age 45, a farmer from Alzey, Germany and his wife, Anna Katharina Bach, age 36, and children Martin (age 16) and Anna Margaretha (age 15). The only Konstantia in Leichtling in 1834 was one Konstantzia Diessler, a six-year-old orphan. She had two brothers, Johannes, age 4, and Feid, age 3 ½. It is probable that Konstantzia Diessler was the same as the Konstantia who married Nikolaus Müller.
