Hezekiah Elmer and Miriam Janes

Hezekiah Elmer was born June 1686 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut to Edward Elmer and (Rebecca Fitch?). Hezekiah moved to Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, then later to Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts 25 May 1717. He served as a private in Capt. Kellogg's Company in 1724-5. He owned Elmore’s Island in the Connecticut river in 1731.

Hezekiah married Miriam Janes. Miriam was the daughter of Benjamin Janes and Hannah (Edwards?). In the past, some researchers attributed to Miriam the birth date (7 Jan 1700) of an older sister with the same name. This led to other researchers stating that Mrs. Miriam Elmer could not be a Janes because Benjamin and Hannah Janes' daughter Mirriam was killed at the age of four in a 1704 massacre. A key to clearing up this confusion was finally found in Benjamin Janes' will, in which he leaves money "unto Meriam Elmer And unto the [written above: gr Children] heirs of Silence Curtis Deceas'd and to Hannah Brown and to Hephzibah Halkens & to Esther Hunt, my well beloved daughters." Keep in mind that it was a common practice in that era for parents to name children after children who had previously died. The most likely explanation, therefore, is that Benjamin and Hannah had a daughter Miriam in 1700, who died in the massacre, then later had another daughter Miriam after the massacre, who married Hezekiah Elmer and was mentioned in Benjamin's will.

Miriam died 19 September 1750 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Hezekiah was alive in 1754.

Hezekiah and Miriam’s children are:

  1. Miriam Elmer, born 31 Jan 1722 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, married Aaron Burt (b. 17 Sep 1717 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts to Joseph and Sarah (Cowles) Burt, built the first gristmill at Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts in 1765, "also had stores and people used to go down the Connecticut in boats and canoes to trade with Aaron Burt, and some of his customers came from places as far north as Charlestown, New Hampshire" (Stearns 1197), “at one time held a large estate in Northfield…was an excellent penman, and knew how to keep his books in a perfect manner” (Burt & Burt), member of the committee to build the first meetinghouse in Northfield, furnished four gallons of West India rum and sold the lock for the meeting house 30 May 1764, furnished 430 pounds of nails to the fort built in 1743-4, d. in 1792) 4 Nov 1740 (according to Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records) or 5 Oct 1740 (according to TAG 28:163) in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Children: David Burt, Jonathan Burt, Sarah Burt, Mary Burt, Mary Burt, Hannah Burt, Ruth Burt, Asahel Burt, Moses Burt (twin), Aaron Burt (twin), Miriam Burt, John Burt, three additional children (names unrecorded). According to Gerzina, Aaron manumitted a slave, Abijah Prince, though he had joined the Shakers in his middle age and was thus morally opposed to slavery. Gerzina explained, "Here are the events as I reconstruct them: Bijah went to Aaron Burt in 1747 and asked the young man to buy him, with the understanding that Bijah would eventually become free, either by agreement or by handing over his large military salary when his service ended. Burt agreed and settled with Doolittle [Bijah's owner], who was probably glad to be rid of a professional liability and to have one less mouth to feed. Bijah left Northfield soon after with Burt's brother-in-law, Hezekiah Elmer, for Deerfield, where they both enlisted with Elijah Williams and served in his company." After service and further work, Bijah learned that there would be an allotment of land in Northfield and to participate he needed his freedom, registration as a taxpayer, and status as a proprietor. Gerzina continued, "It was time for Burt to free him. Burt took his mission extremely seriously and wanted no legal slip-ups." He asked a justice of the peace for the proper wording and practiced writing a manumission before going to Deerfield to sign the document. Bijah succeeded in becoming a free, tax-paying proprietor but the Northfield allotment was delayed and Bijah moved to Northampton instead.
  2. Hezekiah Elmer, born 29 Sep 1724 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, married Sarah Wright (b. 11 Apr 1731 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts to Benoni and Hannah Wright, d. 6 Apr 1809 in Winchester, Cheshire, New Hampshire) 30 May 1751 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, served in Capt. Josiah Willard’s Company at Fort Dummer (Guilford, Windham, Vermont) in 1748. Bought land of Benoni Wright in Hinsdale, N. H., in 1753, which he cleared up and made into a farm, died 20 Nov 1810 in Winchester, Cheshire, New Hampshire, buried (along with Sarah) at South Parish Cemetery, Winchester, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Children: Ann Elmer, Elijah Elmer, Miriam Elmer, Sarah Elmer, Zilpah Elmer, Ozias Elmer, Hezekiah Elmer (died young), Hezekiah Elmer, Philana Elmer.
  3. Jacob Elmer, born 13 Dec 1726 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, died 1 Jan 1726/7 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.
  4. Jacob Elmer, born 17 Nov 1728 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, married Submit Elgar (b. 26 Jan 1733 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts to Abraham and Sarah Elgar, d. 8 Jul 1814) 28 Dec 1754 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, moved to Hinsdale, Cheshire, New Hampshire in 1763, died 11 Nov 1815, buried (along with Submit) at North Vernon Cemetery, North Vernon, Windham, Vermont. Children: Reuben Elmer, Elisha Elmer, John Elmer, Joel Elmer, Benjamin Elmer, Silas Elmer.
  5. Daniel Elmer, born 3 Jul 1730 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, a soldier at Fort Dummer (Guilford, Windham, Vermont) 1748, probably the Daniel Elmer who married Mary Norton 21 Nov 1754 in Sunderland, Franklin, Massachusetts and lived at Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, then Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut, then Peru, Clinton, New York, said to have died in Peru, Clinton, New York and been buried on his son John's farm. Children (if the husband of Mary Norton): Naomi Elmer, Daniel Elmer, Mary Elmer, Lot Elmer, John Elmer, Rhoda Elmer, Maria Elmer, Asa Elmer.
  6. Samuel Elmer, born 20 Sep 1732 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, married 1) Elizabeth Canfield (dau. of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Lankton) Canfield, d. 1809 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts) 25 Oct 1753 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, moved to Granby, Hampshire, Massachusetts, South Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, a blacksmith, married 2) Sarah Smith (b. 24 Aug 1738 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts to Chileab and Sarah (Moody) Smith, m. 1) Nathaniel Harvey and 2) Israel Standish, d. about 1830 (age 92)), died in 1818 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, said to have been buried with his wives in Ashfield.
  7. Gad Elmer, born 4 Oct 1734 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.
  8. Deliverance Elmer (a son; twin to Thankful), called "Dill" for short, born 2 Jan 1736/7 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, died 11 Jan 1804. His epitaph offers clue to his character: "Tranquil and silent here lies Dill/ What gifts he had he handled well/ He did his best to merit fame/ And left behind him a good name/ Remember Dill and do the same."
  9. Thankful Elmer (a daughter; twin to Deliverance), born 2 Jan 1736/7 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, died 20 Apr 1777 of smallpox, buried at North Vernon Cemetery, North Vernon, Windham, Vermont.

22. DANIEL4 ELMER, (Hezekiah,3 Edward,2 Edward,1) born July 3, 1730, in Northfield, Mass. Was a soldier at Fort Dummer, 1748. Is said to have lived in Sunderland in 1755 and in Farmington, Conn., in 1761. He is probably identical with Daniel Elmore, who about 1757 married Mary Norton, of Wethersfield, Vt., and settled first at Northampton, Mass., where his children Lot and John were born, and perhaps all. Feb. 5, 1781, his wife, Mary Elmore, obtained by quit claim deed from Josiah Hatch, of Wethersfield, 54 acres of land in that town, and Dec. 18, 1782, he bought two acres joining the same. Oct. 9, 1795, he deeded this land to Josiah Beckley, and Oct. 29, same year, he and his sons Lot, John and Asa, and his daughter Rhoda Stone, described as of Peru, Clinton Co., N. Y., and Joseph and Mary Willard, of Westminster, Vt., deeded the Mary Elmore land to the same person, she being probably then dead. He was taxed upon 15 acres of improved land in Wethersfield 1788-1791, when he probably removed to Peru. The name is spelled Elmore in the first two deeds and Elmer in the last two. Lot and John settled in Peru when young men. Asa came later. Daniel4 is said to have died in Peru and was buried upon the farm of John.

Encyclopedia of Massachusetts

In both England and America branches of the same family used the forms Elmer and Elmore. The American ancestor from whom the Elmer's of Chicopee trace their descent is Edward Elmer, born in England, about 1604, a son of Edward and Elizabeth Elmer. He came to New England in the ship, "Lion," arriving in Boston, September 16, 1632, and settling first in Cambridge. In 1636 he joined Rev. Joseph Hooker's Company, and went to Hartford, Connecticut, one of the original proprietors, his home lot being on the east side of Main street. In 1654 he became one of the first settlers of Northampton, there was chosen recorder in 1658, but in 1660 returned to Hartford, acquiring in addition to the land owned there a tract of 550 acres on the east side of the river in what is now South Windsor. That tract he and his sons cultivated on that day in June, 1676, when he was killed on his farm by Indians. A portion of that farm at South Windsor is yet owned by descendants of the first owner, Edward Elmer, who hallowed it with his blood.

From Edward and Mary Elmer sprang a large family, they having sons: John, Samuel, Edward and Joseph ; and daughters : Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah. The line of descent to Ellsworth A. Elmer is through the founder's third son, Edward (2) Elmer, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1654, died in South Windsor, October 31, 1725. He married Rebecca , and they were the parents of sons: Hezekiah, Caleb, Amos and Edward; also daughters: Mary, Hester, Rebecca, Hannah and Ann.

Hezekiah Elmer, the eldest son of Edward (2) and Rebecca Elmer, was born in Hartford, in 1636, removed to Deerfield, Massachusetts, thence to Northfield in 1717, and died there, September 19, 1750. He was the owner of Elmore's Island in the Connecticut river, in 1731, and was a soldier in Captain Kellogg's company in 1724. He married Miriam, and they had children: Miriam, Hezekiah (2), Jacob, died young, Jacob (2), Daniel Samuel, Gad, Thankful, and another child. The line continues through Hezekiah (2), the eldest son.

Hezekiah (2) Elmer was born in Northfield, Massachusetts, September 24, 1724, and died November 22, 1810. He was a soldier in Captain Joseph Willard's company. He married, May 30, 1751, Sarah Wright, of Hinsdale, born April 11, 1730, died April 6, 1809. Their children were: Ann, Elijah, Miriam, Sarah, Zilpha, Oziah, Hezekiah and Philena. Descent is again traced through the eldest son, Elijah.

Burt & Burt's Early Days in New England

Aaron Burt (fourth generation), son of Joseph, was born in Hatfield, September 17, 1717; died in 1792. He settled in Northfield and married Miriam Elmer, daughter of Hezekiah Elmer, one of the first settlers of Northfield, The records of the town show that Aaron Burt at one time held a large estate in Northfield. In 1765 he built the first gristmill in Northfield, at Lover's Falls, now Glens Falls. Alex Norton and Aaron Burt owned a house there. The house built by Joseph Burt, father of Aaron, was painted red. The Burts had a store just north of this house, which was a noted place of business; people went down the Connecticut river in boats and canoes from as far north as Charlestown, N. H., to Aaron Burt's store and mill to trade. The Burt family living in Walpole, N. H., have in their possession some of Aaron's account books used by him in the store. We have one in our house at this time, in which we find accounts against the first settlers of Walpole— Major Bellows, Colonel Benjamin Bellows and others. The books are more than 130 years old, and clearly prove that Aaron Burt was an excellent penman, and knew how to keep his books in a perfect manner.

Aaron Burt was on the committee to build the first meeting house in Northfield. He furnished four gallons of West India rum, at eight shillings per gallon, and sold the lock for the meeting house, May 30, 1764, the year it was completed.

The fort was begun in the winter of 1743-4 and completed about the 25th of May following. Aaron Burt furnished 430 pounds of nails at fifteen pence per pound. Joseph Burt gave a mortgage on his red house to Johonnet of Boston in 1757, about the time of his death, and it was redeemed in 1765 by Aaron, who lived there the rest of his days.

(IV) Aaron, fourth son and eighth and youngest child of Joseph and Sarah (Cowles) Burt, was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts. September 17, 1717. He settled at Northfield, where he built the first grist mill in 1765. He also had stores and people used to go down the Connecticut in boats and canoes to trade with Aaron Burt, and some of his customers came from places as far north as Charlestown, New Hampshire. Some of his account books showing his excellent penmanship are still preserved. Aaron Burt married Miriam, daughter of Hezekiah Elmer, of Northfield, Massachusetts. Information on Elmore's Island

Robert S. Elmore wrote: "Report of the President and Directors of the Connecticut River Company, published 1/3/1826. Information on pages 20-21 indicated that the island was about six miles south of where the West River enters the Connecticut River. Cassier's Magazine, An Engineering Monthly, Vol XXXVIII, May-October, 1910. On page 44, it says in part, "One flood washed away what was called Elmore's Island and carried it down the river."" See Elmore, Robert S., "Elmore's Island in the Connecticut River... revisited.," Ancestry Message Boards, 28 Mar 2011, https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.elmer/245/mb.ashx, accessed 11 Aug 2019.

It is proposed to construct a dam across the river, at Coopers' rocks, of the proper height to raise the water 10 1-2 feet. The river at this place, is 591 feet in width; and near the west shore, there is a collection of large rocks lying in the water. The bottom is composed of coarse gravel and stone; and the water from the rocks to the east shore, will average eight feet deep. A pier of wood filled with stone and coarse gravel, 200 feet in length, must be made from the dam up the stream, to afford an easy access to the canal. Timber, stone and gravel can all be procured in the vicinity of the work. The canal to be made along on the west bank, partially by an embankment in the bed of the river, and the remainder, by excavating the top and side of the bank; and connect with the river near the foot of Elmore's island. The slack water made by this dam would be 5 3-4 miles, and the canal 54 chains long.

In the two years that were required for the building of this dam the engineers had more than once to face serious difficulties. One flood washed away what was called Elmore's Island and carried it down the river.
