William Haye and Joan Tufton

William Haye may have been born about 1495. He was the son of John Haye. William married Joan Tufton. Joan was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Tufton and Margaret Hever.

William is found in the subsidy roll of 1524, taxed for £23 of goods at Robertsbridge, Sussex, England, and in the subsidy roll of 1525, taxed for £26 of goods. He was granted a messuage called "Wysemede" in Robertsbridge, as well as a meadow in
Salehurst, Sussex, England, 10 December 27 Henry VIII (1535). At the time of his death, he held various properties in Salehurst. William was a juror 2 April 1536 in Robertsbridge.

William died 22 August 30 Henry VIII (1538). He left no will but an inquisition post mortem for him was held 17 October 34 Henry VIII (1542) in
Robertsbridge, Sussex, England.

William and Joan’s children are:

  1. William Haye, eldest son, born about April 1525 (17 years 6 months at his father's inquisition post mortem), listed in his father's inquisition post mortem as the primary heir to his father's lands in Salehurst, married Joane -- (bur. 15 Nov 1591 in Salehurst, Sussex, England, will dated 4 Nov 1591 and proved 14 Jan 1591/2), will dated12 Aug 1588 and dated 30 Oct 1588.
  2. Thomas Haye, listed in his father's inquisition post mortem, married 1) -- -- and 2) Elizabeth Baker (dau. of John Baker of Witheham, Sussex, England, will dated 5 Jul 39 Eliz. I (1597) and proved 20 Oct 1597, has a monumental inscription in the church at Battle, Sussex, England), gentleman of Battle, Sussex, England, representative for Hastings, Sussex, England to the Cinque Ports on numerous occasions from 1572 to 1592, bailiff of Hastings in 1583, 1585, and 1587, first mayor of Hastings in 1588, mayor again in 1590 and 1591, died in office in 1592, will dated 24 Aug 1591 and proved 23 Mar 1591/2. A monumental brass for Thomas was in the church at Battle, Sussex, England until at least 1784 but has been since lost. His will includes the following: "Whereas I...have binn heretofore binn verie unlawefullie assaulted, wounded and evell intreated to the greate p(er)ill of my liefe by certaine p(er)sonns beinge maliciouslie bente againste me, And am yeat in doubte of such like dannger...if I shall happen to be bereaved of my liefe by anie malefactor or malicious p(er)sonns whatsoever..." He then goes on to ask his executors to prosecute and if they failed to do so, he would leave a large sum to anyone who would do so. In addition, "If any p(er)son or p(er)sons unto whome anie legacie is by this will bequeathed shalbe found guiltie of anie such attempte," they would lose the legacy. Paul C. Reed stated that this fearful addition to his will may have had something to do with his having been a money-lender.
  3. Joane Haye, listed in her father's inquisition post mortem.
  4. Mary Haye, listed in her father's inquisition post mortem.
  5. Agnes Haye, listed in her father's inquisition post mortem.
  6. Bridget Haye, listed in her father's inquisition post mortem.
  7. Margaret Haye, listed in her father's inquisition post mortem.

It is known that two of the five daughters of William and Joan (Joane, Mary, Agnes, Bridget, or Margaret) married David Pylcher and Edward Field but it is not known which daughters married which men:

  1. -- Haye, married David Pylcher (b. abt. 1526 to Luke Pylcher and Alice --, one of the defendants in a Chancery suit concerning The Swan in Hastings, Sussex, England, held freehold lands and tenements in Hooe, Sussex, England and a tenement named "Capenowar" in Battle, Sussex, England, will dated 10 Mar 1576/7).
  2. -- Haye, married Edward Field (a gentleman).
