Richard Trott and (Joane --?)

Richard Trott appears in the Taunton manor register in 1526-7 for a messuage and a ferling of bondland, five acres of bondland, two cottages with appurtenances, and four acres of overland in Otterford, Somerset, England. He also appears in the register in 1533-4 for a messuage and half a virgate of bondland, a cottage with appurtenances, and four acres of overland in South Trendle, a hamlet in Pitminster, Somerset, England. This hamlet was later called Trull.

Of his ancestry, nothing is known for certain. Burton W. Spear stated that, "There is no evidence to support JHT's identification of this William (William Trotte, son of John Trotte, who purchased property at Holford) as the father of a William Trotte involved in land transactions in Hull and Poundisford hundreds 1554-76, or of Richard Trotte..." The possibility that Richard probably came from another town is suggested by Spear: "Certainly there are no references to the surname at Otterford or in Poundisford Hundred." He suggested the possibility that Richard could have been the son of John Trotte of Staplegrove, Somerset, England. Under probable children for John, he lists, "Richard Trotte, possibly a younger son who left Staplegrove to establish himself in Otterford and subsequently Trull."

Richard probably married Joane --, the widow
buried 14 August 1577 in Otterford, Somerset, England. Richard died about 1570.

Richard and Joanna’s children are:

  1. John Trott, buried 16 Oct 1544 in Pitminster, Somerset, England.
  2. John Trott, married 1) Christiana -- and 2) Agnes -- (m. 2) Richard Clenger), mentioned in the Taunton manor register in 1572 (holding an annuity by mortgage), again in 1572 (succeeded to his father's lands in Otterford, a messuage and a furlong of bondland, five acres of bondland, two cottages with appurtenances, and four acres of overland "late of William Bowbye, by surrender of Richard Trotte to be held on condition that the said John Trotte shall not sell nor surrender his aforesaid premises nor any portion of the same to any person or persons except to be held by one of the surname of Trotte," 1574 (for a messuage and a furlong of bondland "called Brodebeares" in Otterford), 1575 (for a house "called the Hay House," another house "called stable House," a three-acre close of bondland, a four-acre close "called Brodemeade" in Corfe, Somerset, England "by surrender of John Vincent, to be held during the lives of Alice, wife of said John Vincent & xpiana (Christiana), wife of said John"), 1589 (for fifteen acres of overland "called Hollemores" in Otterford), 1594 (surrending a messuage and a furlong of bondland in Corfe "to use of his son & heir John Trotte...on condition that Agnes relict of said John shall hold said premises during her widowhood"), and 1595 ("lying in extremis" (at the point of death) surrendered "into hands of the Lord" a messuage and a furlong of bondland and a cottage in Otterford "to use of son & heir Henry Trotte on condition that Agnes the relict of said John to hold same till said Henry is xxj years of age"), died about 1595.
  3. Robert Trott, married Honora -- (bur. 16 Sep 1627 in Pitminster), succeeded father in possession of his South Trendle lands (a messuage and half a virgate of bondland, a cottage with appurtenances, and four acres of overland in South Trendle (a hamlet of Pitminster, Somerset, England) "to be held on the condition that the said Robert shall not sell or surrender the aforsaid premisses nor any portion of the same to any alien person or persons except to one of the surname of Trotte," purchased lands in 1571 (for four acres of overland pasturage in South Trendle), 1572 (including one messuage and half a virgate of bondland), 1573 (for three acres of overland "called Saymore" in Blackdon, Somerset, England by surrender of Thos. Vincent), 1584 for two cottages with curtilages in South Trendle "formerly of Elena Ware, by grant of Richard Aplyn"), again in 1584 (for three acres of overland "called Stonydowne," a parcel of 12 1/2 acres of overland also "called Stonydowne," a barn, a parcel of "le Watring Pitt for beasts" in South Trendle, and 4 acres of overland "called Stony Downe" in South Trendle "late of Agnes Hering, by grant of William Hering") and 1591 (for four acres of overland "called Stonydowne" with all the structures on it in South Trendle "formerly of William White, by grant of Nicholas Gibbes"), buried 11 Feb 1599 in Pitminster, Somerset, England.

Note: John Harvey Treat included William Trott (who married Johane --) and Tamsen Trott (who married Thomas Person) as Richard's children but Burton W. Spear stated that "There is no evidence whatsoever for the inclusion by JHT among Richard Trott's children of William Trott [later of Bradford-on-Tone] and and Tamsen Trott, who married Thomas Person at Bradford-on-Tone on 27 May 1583."
