Gillis Jochimsz (ten Waert)[1] was born about 1581 in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands to Jochem Diericksz and Griet Gillesdr. Gillis married Beijken Schuts in 1607 [2] in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands. Gillis was a tailor living at the Pijlsteech in Amsterdam and Beijken had lived at the Lijnbaensgraft for nine years. Beijken was born about 1583 in Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium.

Agniet Jellis, baptized 1 Dec 1611 in the Nieuwkerk, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, residing at the Heerengracht in Amsterdam at the time of her second marriage, married 1) Elias Provoost (the son of Wilhelmus Provoost and Jenne Eerdewijns), 17 May 1633 in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, 2) Arendt Corsse Stam 26 Jan 1638 in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, and 3) Johannes de la Montagne 28 Aug 1647 in New Amsterdam, New Netherland, immigrated to New Netherland.
3. Barbara Jelis Tangweert, baptized 1 Oct 1613 in the Oudekerk, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, resided in the Doelestreet, married Lambertus Barleus 30 Oct 1633 in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands.
4. Elijsabeth Gillis, baptized 11 Aug 1616 in the Oudekerk, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands.
5. Margriet Gillis ten Waert, baptized 17 Dec 1617 in the Oudekerk, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, resided in the Harnde alley in Amsterdam, married David Provoost 10 Aug 1637 in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, immigrated to New Netherland.
6. Jochem Gillis, baptized 18 Aug 1619 in the Nieuwkerk, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands.

[1] No records have been found where Gillis uses the name Ten Waert. However, David Provoost in his 1749 manuscript called the family Ten Waert. In addition, a Lambert van Baerle and Barbara Tangweert had a child baptized 18 Sep 1635. This is Lambertus Barleus and Barbara Jelis. Also a Cornelia Tangweert appears as a witness at the 13 Jun 1638 baptism at the Oudekerk of Anna, the daughter of Lambertus and Barbara. Tangweert would have been the 17th-century Amsterdam pronunciaton of Ten Waert. Finally, the New Amsterdam baptismal record shows: "1650, 18 Sept; (Parents) Johan de La Montagne; (Child) Gillis; (Witnesses) Olof Stephenszen Van Courtlt., Grietie ten Waert" Footnotes
Also note that Gillis Ten Waert is sometimes attributed as being the same person as Gillis Verbrugge (or Van Brugh). However, Gillis Ten Waert's daughters, Barbara and Cornelia, mention in their marriage records that their parents are not alive. This means Gillis must have died before 30 Oct 1633. There is, however, a 20 Mar 1663 court record in New Amsterdam (see Fernow, vol. IV, pgs. 215-6) where the curators of the estate of Gillis van Brugh demand a mortgage payment from Jacob van Couwenhoven. The mortgage agreement, the record reports, was entered into 25 Jan 1657 between Gillis and Jacob. Therefore, Gillis Ten Waert and Gillis Verbrugge are two separate persons.
[2] Mr. Slok included the text but not the date of the marriage record. He, however, mentioned that Gillis was born 1581. Since there are no extant baptismal records in Amsterdam at the time, he probably calculated Gillis' birth date from the marriage record where Gillis is recorded as being age 26. I calculated Beijken's birth date as 1583 as she was recorded as being age 24 at her marriage.
