Freeman Richardson and Rebecka Smith

Citing this biography: Boyd, Michelle, "Freeman Richardson and Rebecka Smith," article, Olive and Eliza, last accessed [current date]."

Freeman Richardson was born 5 July 1802 in New York to Hill Richardson and Sarah Lee.

Freeman married Rebecca Smith in 1830. Rebecca was born 31 January 1808  in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts to Ebenezer Smith Jr. and Keziah Elmore. Erastus Ranney Ellis said, “She was a noble woman, partaking freely of the ‘Smith’ blood, and was a devoted Christian of the Baptist faith.” She moved with her parents and siblings to Chautauqua county, New York in the fall of 1816. According to Andrew Young, the Smiths “moved with two yoke of oxen on one wagon. [Ebenezer] moved in with Jeduthan Smith, a relative, till a cabin of rudest style was built.”

The family of Freeman Richardson lived in Stockton, Chautauqua, New York in 1840, between the families of Elijah Woods and the families of Hill Richardson and Ami Richardson. In 1850, they were still living in Stockton, next to Freeman’s parents, Hill and Sarah. Freeman was listed in the census as a farmer. The Richardsons moved to North La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1854. In 1860, they were living in Campbell, La Crosse, Wisconsin, where Freeman was a farmer.

Freeman died 15 February 1868 in Campbell, La Crosse, Wisconsin of scrofula. He wrote his will 20 January 1868. He left five dollars to each of his children and the residue to his widow, Rebecca, and made her his executrix. Rebecca gave bond on 27 May 1868 and the will was proved 6 July 1868 (received for record 12 November 1868). Freeman left an estate of $400 with no debts.

Rebecca died 16 May 1887 in North La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin of "jaunders" (jaundice). They are both buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Freeman and Rebecca’s children are:

1 Melissa Richardson, married -- Douglas, resided in Helena, Lewis and Clark, Montana in 1868, died in 1876.
Very little is currently known about Melissa. She appears in the Biographical Sketches of Richard Ellis as a child of Freeman and Rebecca with a death date of 1876. A Melissa Douglas, living in "Helena City, Montana," appears as one of the children of Freeman Richardson in his probate records. Presumably, Douglas was her married name.
It may be worth noting that an 1868 city directory for Helena shows the following entries: a "DOUGLAS J. L., artist, Main Street" and a "Douglas M. M., Ill., milliner, Bridge Street." Whether either of these two are connected to Melissa or to each other is not known. The milliner could potentially be Melissa as the initials are M. M. and women in this era could work as milliners. However, the inclusion of "Ill." (Illinois) is a mystery. Could this be a different person than Melissa? Or could Melissa have left New York and lived in Illinois before coming to Montana? Therefore, it is possible that Melissa was the Bridge Street milliner but it is not conclusive.
If M. M. Douglas was indeed Melissa, she lived and/or worked in an eye-raising location. On Helena, Montana history site, a caption for a photo (shown below) of Bridge Street includes the following information: "By the 1870s, this was the heart of Helena's red-light district." Jasper Richardson, born 9 Jun 1832 in Stockton, Chautauqua, New York and settled in Janesville, Rock, Wisconsin in 1854, spending the winter in the woods, then moved to Campbell, La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1855. He married Mamre Holmes 11 Jan 1859 in Wisconsin. He was a farmer. Jasper resided in La Crosse county, Wisconsin in 1868, moved to Hamilton, La Crosse, Wisconsin after his wife's death (where he lived in his daughter Bertha's home), died 24 Mar 1918 in Hamilton, La Crosse, Wisconsin (at Bertha's home), and was buried Mar 26 at Onalaska City Cemetery, Onalaska, La Crosse, Wisconsin (next to Mamre). He was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In a biographical sketch, it was said that Jasper had “the reputation of being a useful and law-abiding citizen and an intelligent and thoroughly posted man on all public matters…[he] has always been interested in the cause of religion and morality. He is a frank and jovial gentleman, kind, hospitable and charitable, and one whom it does one good to meet. Personally and in every private relation and duty of life he has been liberal, generous and high minded, and he is the soul of true honor and unbounded greatness of heart. He has the instinct and training of the true gentleman; his life has been full of kind deeds, and it can truly be said of him that he never violated a friendship nor forgot a kind action done him.”

The 1900 census records that Nelson and Matilda had been married 55 years, which would be about 1845, but that would have made Matilda 13 at the time of her marriage, which is unlikely.

Husband: Nelson Cyrus, b. May 1828 in Maryland (near Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland), arrived at La Crosse county, Wisconsin 2 Aug 1850, d. 14 Mar 1913 in La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin (at his home at 1013 Clinton Street).

Walters in about 1871, living in Irwin, Barton, Missouri in 1917 (when sister Matilda died), died 24 Feb 1936 in Nevada, Vernon, Missouri, buried 26 Feb 1936 (next to James) in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, Vernon, Missouri.

Feb 1843 in Yeovil, Somerset, England to Jonathan and Jane Gear, bp. 9 Apr 1843 in North Perrott, Somerset, England, immigrated to the US in 1856, often called William, died 12 Jan 1923 in Los Angeles county, California, a farmer in 1870, carpenter in 1880, gardener in 1905, worked at a shades and draperies company in 1921

Children: Elsie E. Gear, Ella M. Gear, and Edna L. Gear.

8 Unknown child, born in Stockton, Chautauqua, New York but not named as one of Freeman's heirs in 1868. Sketches on this family state that Freeman and Rebecca had eight children but only seven have been positively identified. Secondary sources identify a son Miray. A Miray was listed as an 8-year-old male in the 1850 census. However, this could easily have been the then 7-year-old Myra, who does not appear elsewhere on that census, and the census taker may have mistakenly put an M, instead of an F.

History of Chautauqua County, New York

Ebenezer Smith, Jr., from Mass., in the fall of 1816, settled on the west side of Cassadaga creek, 2 m. below the lake, on lot 6. He came in company with David Whittemore and Philip Phillips grandfather of the Messrs. Phillips, now at Cassadaga. His family consisted of himself, wife, four sons, and three daughters. They moved with two yoke of oxen on one wagon. He moved in with Jeduthan Smith, a relative, till a cabin of rudest style was built. It was roofed with rafters, with poles called ribs, running crosswise, on which rough shingles four feet long, rived out of pine trees, were laid; and probably, as was usually done, without being nailed, but fastened with heavy poles, called “weight-poles” laid across. Succeeding the “cold summer,” grain was scarce and high; his wheat costing $2 per bushel, and corn $1; and his cattle were wintered on browse. His children were Aaron, Quartus, Fidelia, Gerry, Rebecca, Ebenezer, and Kezia, all of whom attained the age of majority, and all came to Stockton. The daughters were married, as follows: Fidelia to Elijah Woods; Rebecca to Freeman Richardson; Kezia to Arunah Richardson.

Biographical History of La Crosse, Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties, Wisconsin

JASPER RICHARDSON.—For many years, or since locating in La Crosse county, Mr. Richardson has enjoyed the reputation of being a useful and law-abiding citizen and an intelligent and thoroughly posted man on all public matters. He was born near Jamestown, Chautauqua county, New York, June 9, 1832, a son of Freeman Richardson, and grandson of Hill Richardson, a soldier of the war of 1812. Freeman Richardson was married to Rebecca Smith, who was born at Ashfield, Massachusetts, in 1808. She was eight years of age when her father moved to New York State, and in that State she was educated and grew to womanhood. Her parents were Ebenezer and Keziah (Elder) Smith, and her paternal grandfather was Rev. Caleb Smith, a prominent Baptist minister of the East for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Richardson came to La Crosse county, Wisconsin, in 1854, and were residents of Campbell township until their deaths, the father dying at the age of sixty-six years and the mother at the age of seventy-nine, in North La Crosse. Of a family of eight children born to them, the following are living: Jasper, Matilda, of Tomah, Wisconsin; Amanda, wife of William Purdy, of Barton county, Missouri; Squire F., of Chautauqua county, New York; Myra, wife of James Walters, of Missouri; and Florilla, wife of William Gear, of North La Crosse.

Jasper Richardson was reared and educated in his native county, but in 1854 went to Janesville, Wisconsin, and spent winter in the woods. He purchased present farm of forty-two acres in 1870, on this he has a comfortable residence out-buildings, besides which he owns acres of very valuable land near La Crosse. His farm is located three miles from Onalaska, and being so near La Crosse is considerable money.

He was married November 21 1859, to Miss M. Holmes, a woman whose and kindly heart have won her a host of friends. She was born in Oswego county, New York, and when six years of age taken by her parents to Ohio, and in came with them to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The family came to La Crosse county in 1854, but the father died in Fillmore county, Minnesota, when sixty-seven years of age, having been a soldier in the war of 1812. The mother was called from life in Lake county, Dakota, at the age of seventy-nine. They reared a large family of sons and daughters. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Richardson: Bertha Almeda, Herbert Franklin and Elmer. Two children are deceased: Flora, who died at the age of seven years, and Squire Freeman, at the age of two years and eleven months.

Politically Mr. Richardson is a Republican. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church; has been class leader, and has always been interested in the cause of religion and morality. He is a frank and jovial gentleman, kind, hospitable and charitable, and one whom it does one good to meet. Personally and in every private relation and duty of life he has been liberal, generous and high minded, and he is the soul of true honor and unbounded greatness of heart. He has the instinct and training of the true gentleman; his life has been full of kind deeds, and it can truly be said of him that he never violated a friendship nor forgot a kind action done him.
