Chileab Smith and Hannah Hitchcock

Chileab Smith was born about 1636 to Samuel Smith and Elizabeth Smith. Note that some early genealogies on this family assumed that because of Chileab's unusual name, he was probably named after his mother's maiden name. However, later research shows that Chileab was a biblical name (a Chileab is named in 2 Samuel 3:3 as a son of King David) and that his mother was not Elizabeth Chileab. Rather, his mother Elizabeth was born a Smith and married a Smith.

Chileab married Hannah Hitchcock 2 Oct 1661 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
Hannah was born about 1645 to Luke Hitchcock and Elizabeth Gibbons. Chileab was admitted freeman 7 May 1673 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He was appointed an ensign.

Chileab died 7 March 1731 (age 95).
Hannah died 31 August 1733 (age 88). Both were buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery, Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Their headstone includes in its inscription: "Its worthy of memory they were in marriag stat 70 year at lest"

THE SMITHS.
The following document was written by Elder Ebenezer Smith the year before his death:

"Stockton, Chautauqua Co., N. Y., May 1st, 1823.
"For the information of my children I write the following account of my grandfather's posterity. My grandfather's name was Preserved Smith; his wife, Mary Smith, by whom he had one daughter and six sons. He died when they were all small. His daughter, Mary, and oldest son, Preserved, died young, and were not married; his second son, Ebenezer, married, had a son, Preserved, and a daughter, Hannah; he was killed at raising my Grandfather Moody's house; his son went into the army and died with sickness; his daughter married, had a family, and died in old age. My grandfather's third son, Samuel, married Sarah Morton, and had 12 children. My grandfather's fourth son, Chileab Smith, who was my father, married Sarah Moody, and had 13 children. My grandfather's fifth son, James, married Sara Smith; had only two daughters that lived to grow up. Samuel, Chileab, James, three brothers, all lived to be upwards of 90 years of age, and died one after another — as they were born. My grandfather's sixth son, Moses, died when a child..."

P. S. — My son, Ebenezer: I commit this to your care to show to as many of my children and grandchildren as you have opportunity. E. S.

Selleck's Norwalk

HOME-LOT XXVIII.
JOHN BOUTON.3

Whatever may have been the nationality, whether French or English, of the original Boutons, it will hardly be disputed that John Bouton1st. of Norwalk, deserves to be classed among the recognized foremost of the town's settlers.

He was proprietor of a home-lot, nearer the water side than most of the other primitive hearthstones under description. The tracks (in 1896) of the Consolidated road south-border it, and the present Osborn Avenue of East Norwalk, traverses it. The first John Bouton of Norwalk (a " sonn of John Bowton ") had a sister (Mrs. Bridget Kellogg) and a brother 1 Richard).4 On Jan. 1, 1656, he married, in Norwalk, Abigail, daughter of Matthew Marvin1st., and had by her:

Richard.

Mrs. John Bouton
1st. (Abigail Marvin) having died, her husband married, next, Mary, the widow of Jonathan Stevenson1st., a Norwalk soldier of colonial times service, who died "the last of November, 1689". It seems probable that the youngest daughter,1 Mary, of John Bouton1st., was the offspring of this last union. She married Lemuel, baptized Nov. 1, 1696, son of Thomas2d. and Martha (Hobby) Morehouse of Fairfield. The first wife of Thomas Morehouse2d. was Isabelle, daughter of Ralph Keeler1st. of Norwalk.

4Richard Bouton1st., brother of John Bouton
1st. of Norwalk, married Ruth, born Jan. 28, 1644, daughter of Benj. and Mary Turney of Fairfield, and afterward step-daughter of Joseph Middlebrook, who had married Mary, widow of Benj. Turney of Pequonnock (Bridgeport, 1896). Richard1st. and Ruth (Turney) Bouton had one child, Ruth, who was niece of Capt. Robert Turney of Fairfield, who was eleven years the senior of his sister Ruth, the wife of Richard1st. and mother of said Ruth Bouton.
1There was a Norwalk Wait Bouton of this early period who married Robert Lockwood.
