Elijah Devol was the son of Jonathan Devol and Sarah Cadman. He was born in Tiverton, Newport, Rhode Island, according to daughter Nancy's death record, although his family is recorded in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island. Elijah married Judith Davenport 12 October 1777 in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island. Judith was born in 1753 in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island to Eliphalet Davenport and Ann Devol.

Elijah was living in Tiverton in 1777 when a military census was taken there. He served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Capt. Peleg Simmons's company, Col. Christopher Olney's regiment. He marched and joined up 8 [Oct?] 1781 and was reported as being on guard. He appears on a muster roll 23 October 1781 in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island

Elijah was listed as living in Tiverton, Newport, Rhode Island in 1790 and 1810. Judith was a member of the church at Tiverton in 1797 and baptized as an adult there 24 Nov 1799.

Elijah died 20 September 1810. Judith was still living in 1820, when she was listed as living in Tiverton, Newport, Rhode Island in the census.
