William Bunker and Mary Macy
William Bunker was baptized 17 June 1648 in Tingrith, Bedfordshire, England, the son of George Bunker and Elizabeth Godfrey. He came to America with his parents and older sister, Elizabeth, in about 1650. His three younger sisters, Mary, Ann, and Martha, were born in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts, where they settled. At the age of ten, he was with his father, who was crossing a stream with a team, when his father drowned. William escaped with the team. He moved to Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1659 with his mother and stepfather, Richard Swain. William married Mary Macy 11 April 1669 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Mary was born in 1648[1] in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts to Thomas Macy and Sarah Hopcot. Mary’s two older sisters were Sarah (died young) and Sarah. She had two younger brothers, Thomas and John, and a younger sister, Bethia. William’s lot on Nantucket was originally part of his stepfather Richard Swain’s land but he was later given his own lot north of No Bottom Pond. William raised sheep, was appointed to keep the jail, served as a selectman, and was commissioned to build a mill (which, however, he did not do). Tradition states that the Bunker home was raided by Frenchmen on night and William was forced to go aboard their ship for several days to guide them into Vineyard Sound. William died 26th 7 mo 1712 in Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts. His will was dated 22 June 1712 and was probated 5 Aug of the same year. Mary died 10th 3 mo 1729 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

William Bunker was born 1648 and died in Nantucket in 1712, leaving eleven children. In the first layout of house lots, being a minor, his part was included in the portion allotted to Richard Swain; but a few years later he was given ten acres north from No Bottom Pond. It was bounded on the north by the road which is West Cheseter street extended, and was the first road established, and on the west by land of William Worth. After William Bunker died, the proprietors gave his heirs land in place of that taken for a town house. This indicates that the localities marked for church, town house, and jail, wer correct. These three public buildings were placed on the hill north from No Bottom Pond. At the west end of this hill was erected the first schoolhouse mentioned in the records. In 1686, William Bunker was appointed to keep the jail. He was a selectman twice and was given the work of building a mill in which he failed, and the job was finished by Tristram Coffin…

Probated the will of William Bunker, the witnesses being Joseph and Benjamin Swain and Nathan and Eleazer Folger, Jr. “My sons George and Jonathan being by me already advanced”, received only small legacies. To his wife Mary the “west end of my house she lives in for life”. To son Benjamin “my house and lot.” To daughters Jane Bunker, Ann Paddock, Abigail and Mary Bunker, small legacies. Rest of property to sons Jabez, Thomas and Peleg. Dated June 22, 1712.
September 23, 1721. Administration was granted on estate of Thomas Bunker, to George, Peleg and Jabez Bunker. It was valued at £1,000. It was divided between Mary Bunker, mother of deceased, George Bunker, Peleg Bunker, Jabez Bunker, Ann Paddock, Jane Wadson, Abigail Pinkham, mary Coffin and the children of Jonathan and Bunjamin Bunker, both deceased. Nathaniel Paddack was born in 1677; Of Cape Cod, came to Nantucket about 1690. Had 2 bros., Nathaniel and Icabod, sons of Zacchariah. He married Ann Bunker, daughter of William Bunker and Mary Macy, in 1706. WILLIAM, Topsfield, son of George of the same, was named for his grandfather in England and after death of his father and marriage of his mother again, was carried by her to Nantucket in 1658, married 11 April 1669, Mary, daughter of Thomas Macy, founder of that settlement, had George, born 22 April 1671; John, 23 July 1673; Jonathan, 25 February 1675; Peleg, 1 December 1676; Jabez, 7 November 1678; Thomas, 8 April 1680; and Benjamin, 28 May 1683; and died 26 June 1712.

George’s son William (N-2) was the first Bunker male to actually live, work, and die on Nantucket. History records that William raised sheep in addition to his other means of livelihood.

There is an interesting tradition concerning him (William Bunker). His residence was quite isolated from his fellow islanders. Early one night, after the family had gone to bed, the house was surrounded by Frenchmen in search of plunder. A vessel had been sighted in the afternoon a short distance from the shore, but special attention was not paid to it. In the evening, the large oven was heated with a blazing fire and the light from it served as a beacon to the marauders. England and France at that period were at war with each other. Late in the evening the toothsome rye and indian bread, pumpkin pies and other culinary nicities were taken from the oven and were left smoking and odorously hot when the family retired. Seddenly the door was lifted from its hinges, and in walked the undesired and unwelcome visitors.
Nothing could be more grateful to the wretches than the contents of that oven spread in profusion around them, and, “nothing loth” they purloined the whole batch. Nor did they stop here; they took beds and bedding, clothing, and, indeed, everything which their rapicity demanded, and then added to their insolence, by demanding that the good farmer himself should go on board their craft which they had left near the shore, and pilot her into the Vineyard Sound. He had no alternative but to go, and after an absence of a few days, he returned to his distressed family. His wife was a woman of indomitable preserverence, and she sustained herself throughout the loneliness of that memorable night, and after surveying their rifled home, ast around her that she might repair the ravages as best she could. Her friends did not forget her necessity, and she had cause to remember their kindness, even though she was heard to say that the “loss of her twenty pair of sheets was never wholly repaired.”Source: Barney, Nathaniel, unpublished writing.
