JOHN, Nantucket, brother of the preceding (Isaac Coleman of Nantucket, son of Thomas), married Joanna, eldest daughter of Peter Folger, had John, born 2 August 1667; Thomas, 17 October 1669; Isaac, 6 February 1672; Phebe, 15 June 1674; Benjamin, and Abigail, twins 17 January 1677; Solomon; and Jeremiah; and died 1716. His widow died 18 July 1719.Source: Savage, James, A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1990 (originally published Boston, 1860-1862).
Footnotes:
[1] Nantucket Vital Records give the name of Thomas’ wife as Jane, the widow of John Challenge and daughter of William and Mary Bunker. However, it also records Thomas’ brother, Isaac as marrying Jane, widow of Robert Watson and daughter of William and Mary Bunker. The Barney record gives Thomas’ wife’s name as Jane Childs, the widow of John Challenge and Isaac’s two wives’ names as Ann Reynolds and Jane Bunker, the widow of Robert Watson.
[2] See section on Robert or Gershom Cathcart and Phebe Coleman on the apparent inconsistency between the date of Phebe’s second marriage and her death.
[3] The extracted records from the IGI show Abigail as being born 17 Mar and Benjamin 17 Jan of the same year. Since, in the Julian calendar, March was the first month of the year and, in the Gregorian, January is the first month, this may indicate that Benjamin and Abigail, recorded as twins in Savage’s register and in the Barney record, may have been born 1st 1 mo 1676 (Quaker dating) but that the transcriber(s) recorded it as a standard date.
[4] Note in Vital Records: “P. R. 38—private record, from the William C. Folger genealogical records in possession of the Nantucket Historical Association (This compilation has been used because of the valuable clues it affords, but its statements should be received with caution, as it is not free from errors. It should also be understood that in many instances the events recorded did not take place in Nantucket, and in a few cases attention has been called to the question of residence.)”
