Joseph Berger and Katharina —

Citing this biography: Boyd, Michelle, "Joseph Berger and Katharina —," article, Olive and Eliza, last accessed [current date]."

Joseph Berger was born about 1723 in Bühlertann, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Joseph married Katharina —. Katharina was born about 1740 in Bühlertann, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. They arrived in Russia from Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 18 June 1766 on the ship Die Perle. They settled in Leichtling, Saratov, Russia 14 May 1767.

Joseph and Katharina do not appear in the 1798 census. The only Bergers in Leichtling are the family of Peter Berger and one Katharina (Berger) (Groh) Bauer. If Peter Berger's age is correct in the 1798 census, then he should have appeared in the First Settlers List, about age 6. However, he does not appear in any Berger/Burger/Borger/Burghardt family in any colony. The possibility exists that Peter was either inadvertently unrecorded or recorded in later records with an inaccurate age. Because of the fact that they lived in the same colony, Joseph and Katharina were the most likely parents for Peter. While Joseph and Katharina did have a daughter named Katharina, it is not absolutely certain if Katharina (Berger) (Groh) Bauer is the same person as this daughter (as the daughter of Joseph and Katharina was born in about 1764 while Katharina (Berger) (Groh) Bauer would have been born about 1762) but it is likely.

Joseph and Katharina’s children are:

1 Katharina Berger, born about late 1764 in Bühlertann, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, probably the Katharina Bauer who appeared in the 1798 census and married 1) Sebastian Groh and 2) Franz Bauer.

Husband 1: Sebastian Groh, d. bef. 1798.

Husband 2: Franz Bauer, b. abt 1777.

2 Eva Maria Berger, born about 7 May 1767 in Russia.

3 Possibly Peter Berger, born about 1761 (according to the 1798 and 1834 censuses but may or may not be accurate), married Maria Dorothea Biehn, died in 1818.

Wife: Maria Dorothea Biehn, b. abt. 1775, prob. dau. of Johannes Biehn and Katherina Säger.
