Johann Adam Hoffmann was of Lautzkirchen, Saarland, Germany.
Johann married Magdalena Abel 13 January 1739. Magdalena was of
Seelbach, Blieskastel, Saarland, Germany.
Johann was a cow and swine herder. This occupation would have required
the family to move frequently, thus explaining the varying locations of
the children’s christenings. All German locations listed for this family
were near Blieskastel, Saarland, Germany.
There is a possiblity that Johann and Magdalena moved to Rohleder,
Saratov, Russia in 1767, where their son Johannes settled the year
before. A Johannes, Magdalena, and fifteen-year-old daughter Elisabeth
(which would make her about four years old at her christening—while
parents often took their children to be christened right after birth,
sometimes they were christened much later) appear on the First Settlers
List (see below). However, Magdalena is listed as 70 (20 years older
than her husband). This would make her 42 when the first Hoffmann child
was christened and 62 when the last child was christened. Even if the
last child was a few years old at her children, this would have been
unusually old. Possible explanations are 1) there is a transcription
error and Magdalena was much younger, 2) sometime after his children
were born, Johann married secondly another Magdalena, who was much older
than him, or 3) this is not Johann Adam and Magdalena (Abel).
Johann Adam and Magdalena’s children are:
