John Abell and Rebeckah Sluman

Citing this biography: Boyd, Michelle, "John Abell and Rebeckah Sluman," article, Olive and Eliza, last accessed [current date]."

John Abell was born December 1678 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut to Caleb Abell and Margaret Post. John married Rebeckah Sluman 2 Jun 1703 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut. Rebeckah was born 3 October 1682 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut to Thomas Sluman and Sarah Bliss.

Horace A. Abell states that John served as constable from 1708 to 1713 and that in 1736, he joined the Goshen Society Church at Lebanon, New London, Connecticut. Abell also claims that in 1755, John was ensign of the Norwich Company, becoming lieutenant in 1758, and captain in October of 1769. I do have reservations about the accuracy of this statement as John would have been serving in military positions between the ages of 77 and 91.

Rebeckah died 28 May 1758 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, according to transcribed burial records. She was buried at Exeter Cemetery, Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.

John and Rebeckah’s children are:

1 John Abell, born 10 Mar 1703/4 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, died 10 Mar 1703/4 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.

2
Sarah Abell, born 2 March 1704 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married her second cousin Benjamin Metcalf 26 October 1726 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, died 27 Apr 1781 in Connecticut, buried in Johnson Cemetery, Bozrah, New London, Connecticut with Benjamin.

Husband: Benjamin Metcalf, b. 12 Mar 1704/5 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut to Ebenezer and Hannah (Abell) Metcalf, d. 10 Oct 1777 in Connecticut, will dated 23 May 1777 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut and proved 10 Nov 1777.

3 Solomon Abell, born 7 Jan 1707 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, baptized 16 Feb 1710 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, married Mary Northam 9 Mar 1747/8 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.

Wife: Mary Northam, b. 28 Nov 1723 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut to Jonathan and Mary Northam.

4 Rebecca Abell, born 18 Jan 1710/11 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married John West Jr. 8 Nov 1738 in New London, New London, Connecticut (also recorded marrying 16 Nov 1738 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut).

Husband: John West Jr.,
b. 12 Mar 1715 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut to John and Deborah West, d. 31 Jan 1766 in Windham, Windham, Connecticut.

5 Hannah Abell, born 26 Sep 1716 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married Marshall Hackley () 3 Oct 1739 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, died 13 Oct 1749 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.

Husband: Marshall Hackley, b. 21 Oct 1715 in New London, New London, Connecticut to Peter and Elizabeth Hackley, bapt. 4 Dec 1715 in New London, New London, Connecticut.

6 Bethiah Abell, born 18 Oct 1718 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married Amos Randall 19 Feb 1740 or 1741 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, died 19 Sep 1766, buried at Tater Hill Cemetery, East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut with Amos.

Husband: Amos Randall, b. abt. 1712, d. 29 Apr 1776 in East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut, will dated 21 Sep 1767, proved 22 May 1776.

7 David Abell, born 1 Apr 1722 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married Alice Roberts 12 Jul 1742 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, will dated Jun 1781 at Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut, inventory shown 1 Aug 1781.

Wife: Alice Roberts, b. abt. 1722, d. 11 Mar 1784 in Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut, bur. Cartwright Burying Ground (on Ellsworth East Street), Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut.

Note about a possible second marriage for John:

Horace A. Abell stated that John was probably the John Abell who married second Hannah Gifford 20 September 1744 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut. If so, they were the parents of two daughters:

  1. Hannah Abell, born 7 Mar 1745/6 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, died 17 Jan 1755 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.
  2. Jerusha Abell, 11 or 13 Mar 1747/8 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, married Thomas Williams 6 Dec 1767 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.

However, if the death year for Rebeckah is correct in the burial record transcriptions, this is not likely, as Rebeckah would have still been alive. Photographs of the death year on Rebeckah's gravestone do not clearly show the decade, unfortunately. But on the gravestone, it states that she was age 77, which if she did die in 1758, as stated in transcriptions, would have made her birth date about 1681, very close to her actual recorded birth date of 3 October 1682.

In addition, John and Hannah had a daughter Hannah while John's older daughter Hannah was still alive. This does not entirely eliminate the possibility that John married Hannah Gifford, however, because on very rare occasions in earlier centuries, a family gave two children the same name. Plus, the older Hannah would have been going by Hannah Hackley, her married name, at that point. However, it would be an unusual situation.

Another unusual circumstance was that, if Horace Abell was correct, John would have been 66 at the date of this possible second marriage, 68 at the birth of the younger Hannah, and 70 at the birth of another daughter of John and Hannah, Jerusha. Hannah would have had to have been at at least 20 years his junior (and likely much more) in order to bear Jerusha. While all this is possible, it is not common.

In short, while I cannot definitely state whether our John was or was not the one who married Hannah Gifford, I don't think it is likely.
