Nathan Lee was born 23 August 1738 in Lebanon, New London,
Connecticut to Stephen Lee and Mercy
Bentley. On 10 August 1757, Nathan was listed as a part of a
group of men assembled by Captain Joshua West in Goshen, Lebanon, New
London, Connecticut “to march with the Soldiers if thereto required.”
Nathan married Sarah Metcalf 7 October 1763 in Bozrah, New
London, Connecticut. Sarah was born 10 December 1738 in Lebanon, New
London, Connecticut to Benjamin
Metcalf and Sarah Abell.
Nathan was listed on the 27 December 1779 tax list for Albany county,
New York. In 1790, Nathan lived in Canaan, Columbia, New York. He
mortgaged property at Fort Ann, Washington, New York 29 July 1791, in
Granville, Washington, New York 14 November 1794, in Hartford,
Washington, New York 8 February 1798, and again in Hartford 9 March
1798. In 1800, Nathan was living in Otsego, Otsego, New York and in
1810, he was in Ellisburg, Jefferson, New York.
On 14 January 1812, Roger Metcalf of Otsego, wrote to the selectmen of
Lebanon to tell them “that Mr. Lee has gone to live with his children”
on 10 January. Apparently, he had moved back and forth between
Connecticut and New York and had been receiving support from the town of
Lebanon.
Nathan and Sarah’s children are:
1 | John
Abel Lee, born 10 Aug 1764 in Lebanon, New London,
Connecticut, baptized 25 Sep 1768 at Goshen Congregational Church,
Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, living in Otsego, Otsego, New
York in 1800, 1810, and 1820. From information in the censuses, he
was most likely married with a daughter (born about 1794). |
2 |
Cynthia
Lee, born 8 Jul 1766 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut,
baptized 25 Sep 1768 at Goshen Congregational Church, Lebanon, New
London, Connecticut. |
3 | Sarah
Lee, sometimes called Sallie (a common diminutive of
Sarah), baptized 2 Dec 1770 at Goshen Congregational Church,
Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married Hill Richardson,

Richardson, Freeman Richardson, William Richardson, Arunah Richardson, John Richardson, and Louisa Richardson. |
4 | Stephen Lee, baptized
13 Nov 1774 at Goshen Congregational Church, Lebanon, New London,
Connecticut. |
5 | Probably Benjamin M. Lee,
born about 1775, was listed on the 1800 Otsego, Otsego, New York
census living near Nathan. living in Chautauqua, Chatauqua, New
York in 1820 and in Stockton, Chautauqua, New York in 1830, he
served in the 55th Regiment (Allen’s), New York Militia as a
private in the War of 1812. From information in the censuses, he
was most likely married with a number of children. |

Sarah Lee's Parents are Nathan Lee and Sarah Metcalf
By Darryl Boyd (original page)
I knew Sarah was born around 1871 in Connecticut from the 1850 census
and also from a biography of one of her grandson's John Lee
Richardson.
So I set out to try to eliminate about 4 Sarah Lee's born in
Connecticut around that time. I had done two of the 4 when I got to
this Sarah Lee. Records showed her Father as Nathan Lee and Mother as
Sarah Metcalf and suddenly a bell rang out.
I remembered on the 1800 Census of Otsego New York where Hill and
Sarah is living, on each side of her is Nathan Lee on one side and a
Benjamin M. Lee. Also on that same page is a bunch of Metcalfs.
After studing the records for Lebanon, CT, I realized:
1) Nathan Lee was the father of a Sarah Lee born in 1771
(on the 1800 Otsego, NY census and living
next door to them and not on the 1810 Lebanon census, so he moved to
Otsego NY)
2) Her mother was Sarah Metcalf
3) They had a son named Benjamin Metcalf Lee (Benjamin got
his name from Sarah's father, Benjamin Metcalf)
(Benjamin M. Lee on the 1800 Otsego, NY
census and living next door to them )
4) Hill and Sarah Lee have children named
Nathan - after her father
Cynthia - after her sister
John - after her brother
5) They had a son named John Lee (brother to Sarah Lee)
(John is a few farms away from Hill and
Sarah on the 1800 Otsego, NY )
6) Sarah Lee's Father had a brother named Stephen Lee
(Stephen is a few farms away from Hill and
Sarah on the 1800 Otsego, NY )
7) Sarah Lee's mother Sarah Metcalf had a brother named Zebulon
Metcalf
(on the 1800 Otsego, NY census Zebulon
Metcalf is living 12 farms down from Hill and Sarah)
8) Zebulon Metcalf had several sons all born in Lebanon
Abel Aur Metcalf
Tracey Metcalf
Roger Metcalf
Charles Metcalf
(on the 1800 Otsego, NY census and living 12
farms down from Hill and Sarah on seperate farms around Zebulon
Metcalf)
All these people were born in Lebanon, Connecticut and moved to
Otsego, New York

The Father of Nathan Lee Jr.
Since there is no birth record of Nathan Lee (ca. 1768-1835), it is
not absolutely certain who his father was. In the 1800 census, Nathan
Lee is called Nathan Lee Jr., but in this era Jr. only signified that
he was the younger Nathan Lee in the town, not necessarily the son of
Nathan Lee. Of greater significance, however, is the fact that Nathan
Lee Jr. is right after Nathan Lee in the 1800 census record (page 2 of
the Lebanon census), which probably indicated a familial relationship
between the two. In addition, two spaces below Nathan Lee Jr. is Dan
Bliss, who married Nathan Sr.'s eldest daughter Eunice (her second
husband; she was the widow of Calvin Newcomb when she married Daniel
Bliss). All the other Lees are clustered together in another part of
Lebanon: Solomon, Israel, Israel Jr., Dan(iel) are on page 12, and
Charles appears on page 13 of the census record, and thus all are on
the completely other side of town. In the absence of any direct
evidence, therefore, it is most reasonable to conclude that, since
Nathan Jr. is next to Nathan Sr. in the census, and since all the
other Lees live in Goshen society, on the south side of Lebanon, that
Nathan Lee Sr. is the father of Nathan Lee Jr.
It appears, however, that there were two Nathan Lees who were alive in
Lebanon during the period 1740-1800 (not including Nathan Lee Jr.).
Either one of these Nathans could potentially be the father of Nathan
Lee Jr. One Nathan Lee was born in 1738 and married Sarah Metcalf in
1763. This Nathan had children John Abel, Cynthia, Sarah, Stephen, and
Benjamin. This Nathan went with his children to Canaan, Columbia, New
York by 1790 and to Otsego, New York before 1800, and then to
Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York by the 1810 census, in which
Nathan appears as over 45.
The other Nathan Lee was probably born a little earlier, 1730-1736,
and married Eunice Porter, daughter of Nathaniel Buell Porter by 1758,
in which they appear in a property deed together, selling land
inherited from her father to Daniel Vaughan (Lebanon Deeds Book 9, p.
228). Nathan & Eunice Lee also transfer land in Lebanon for £60 to
Jonathan Trumbull: "Mr. Nathan Lee & Eunice Lee his wife the
grantor of the within written instrument personally appearing
acknowledged the same to be their due act & deed / before me."
This Nathan Lee was probably the one who fought in the French and
Indian Wars (though the other one possibly may have as well.) This
Nathan had a child Eunice, born 21 Oct 1766, died 1 Feb 1852. Since
the other Nathan had a daugher Cynthia born 8 Jul 1766, it is
therefore highly likely that there were two different Nathans living
in Lebanon at the time. At first I thought that the two Nathans were
one and the same, and that Eunice Porter was his first wife, but the
conflict of birth dates of Cynthia and Eunice in 1766 has convinced me
otherwise.
So which Nathan is the father of Nathan Jr.? I cannot be certain at
this point in time, but the fact that Nathan named his first daughter
Eunice, leads me to think that he is the son of the older Nathan Lee
and Eunice Porter and not the son of Nathan Lee and Sarah Metcalf. In
addition, although Nathan Jr. does have a daughter Sarah Elizabeth, he
does not name any of his children John, Cynthia, Stephen, or Benjamin.
Finally, Nathan Jr. appears next to a Nathan Lee Sr. in Lebanon at the
same time as the Nathan Lee who married Sarah Metcalf appears in
Otsego, Otsego, New York in the 1800 census. So Nathan Jr. is the son
of Nathan Lee and Eunice Porter.
The age and birth date of Nathan Lee Jr.:
He is age 26-45 in the 1800 census, and
therefore born between 1755 and 1774.
He is age 26-45 in the 1810 census of Colchester, and therefore born
between 1765 and 1784.
He is age 60-70 in the 1830 census, and therefore born between 1760
and 1770.
Thus he must have been born between 1765 and 1770. Nathan's
sister Eunice was born in 1766, so I think it most likely that Nathan
was born in about 1768 or 1769.
