Thomas Coleman and Susan Raulines
Thomas Coleman was born in 1602 (deposed in 14 August 1662 as age 60) and was from Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. Thomas married Susan Raulines 24 November 1623 in Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire, England. The Colemans sailed from Southampton, Hampshire, England on the James of London. They were listed as preparing to sail 5 April 1635 and Thomas is listed as being from Marlborough) According to Savage, they arrived in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts 3 June 1635.
The Colemans settled at Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. According to Savage, Thomas was under contract with Sir Richard Saltonstall to keep cattle in the New World. According to Savage, the Court ruled that he had been negligent in his duties (note, however, that these details are not repeated in Great Migration Begins). Thomas was admitted freeman 17 May 1637 at Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. He was a lotlayer in Newbury 23 September 1638. He also served on the petit jury for Essex county 28 March 1648 and 25 March 1651. GMB notes that there may be a connection between the Colemans and Thomas Chase of Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire.
Susan died 17 November 1650 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. Thomas married second Mary — (widow of Edmund Johnson of Hampton) on either 16 July 1651.[1]
The Colemans moved to Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire in 1652. While in Hampton, Thomas served as a commissioner to end small causes 5 October 1652. He served on the grand jury 12 April 1653 at Salisbury, Merrimack, New Hampshire. In deeds in Newbury, Thomas was listed as a yeoman and husbandman and in Hampton, he was listed as a planter.
Mary died 30 January 1662/3 in Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire. Thomas married third Margery Fowler. Margery was the daughter of Philip Fowler and the widow of Christopher Osgood and Thomas Rowell. She would later, after Thomas Coleman's death, marry Thomas Osborne of Nantucket.
Thomas moved to Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1663. He appeared in a list of communicants of Hampton church 18 September 1671, even though he was in Nantucket by then. His estate was administered 1 August 1682 and was granted to son Tobias with "Joseph Coulman" as surety.

- Dorothy Coleman, baptized 19 Dec 1624 at St. Mary's church, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, buried 17 May 1625 at St. Peter and St. Paul's church, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.
- Dorcas Coleman, baptized 23 Jul 1626 at St. Peter and St. Paul's church, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, married John Tilotson 4 Jul 1648 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.
- Hannah Coleman, died Jan 1642 in Newbury, Essex, Masschusetts (appears as Susanna in the duplicate of her death record, according to GMB).
- Thomas Coleman, Jr., appears in only one known record, where he was presented before court 26th day 1st month 1651 "for striking William Richardson of Newbury with the swingle of a flail." A flail was a tool used to thresh grain and was made of a wooden handle attached to another piece of wood called a swingle, which was swung and used to hit the sheaves and knock the grain loose (click here to see an example of an earlier use of a flail).
- Tobias Coleman, born in about 1638, married Lydia Jackson 16 April 1668 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts, granted ten acres of land by his father on 3 Nov 1673 (which deed specified that the land would go to Lydia at Tobias's decease, with provisions that Tobias pay his brothers John and Joseph at Thomas's death and that "his mother my now wife" enjoy the third part of Thomas's estate).
- Benjamin Coleman, born 1 May 1640 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts[2], died 21 Oct 1650 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts (drowned).
- Joseph Coleman, born 2 Dec 1642 in in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts[3], married Ann Bunker (daughter of George Bunker), died 4 mo 1690 in Nantucket, Massachusetts, letters of administration on his estate were granted unto William Bunker and Stephen Coffin 12 Aug 1690.
- John Coleman, married Joanna Folger, died 12 mo 1715 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
- Isaac Coleman, born 20 Feb 1646/7 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, died (drowned with John and Bethia (Folger) Barnard when their boat was upset while crossing from Nantucket to Martha’s Vineyard) 6 Jun (6th 6 mo) 1669.
- Perhaps Joanna Coleman, included in Vital Records of Nantucket but without any information except her supposed parents) and by Savage but not included in Great Migration Begins.

THOMAS, Newbury, from Marlborough, in Wilts, arrived at Boston 3 June 1635 in the James from Southampton, came out under contract with Sir Richard Saltonstall and others, to keep their cattle, in which he was negligent and unfaithful as the Court ruled yet was admitted freeman 17 May 1637, by wife Susanna, who died 17 November 1650, had Tobias, born 1638; Benjamin, 1 May 1640; Joseph, 2 December 1642; John, 1644; Isaac, 20 February 1647, before mentioned; and Joanna; removed to Hampton, married 11 July 1651, Mary, widow of Edmund Johnson, who died 30 January 1663; and he took for third wife Margery, daughter of Philip Fowler (widow of Thomas Rowell of Andover, who had been widowed of first Christopher Osgood of Andover) He removed to Nantucket before 1663, there died 1682, aged 80. Perhaps Susanna, who died 2 January 1643, was his daughter. Coffin says he spelled his name “Coultman,” but in my opinion it was Coaleman, or Coulman, as in old writing e is frequently taken for t, and u for a is common enough error in modern.
TOBIAS, Rowley, eldest son of Thomas of Newbury, had Jabez, born 27 May 1668; Sarah, 17 June 1670; Thomas, 26 March 1672; Lydia; Deborah, 25 May 1676; Eleazer; Ephraim; and Judah. The eldest was killed by the Indians at Kingston. He had right in Nantucket lands but did not go there, perhaps, with his father or even after his death.
