Shubael Gorham and Puella Hussey

Shubael Gorham was born 21 October 1667[1] in Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts to John Gorham and Desire Howland. He was given an extra share of money from his father’s estate to receive an education in “a learned profession” but chose instead to become a house carpenter. As he was young at his father’s death, his chosen guardian was his brother James.

Shubael married Puella Hussey
[2] in May 1695[3]. Shubael, his family, and his friends sailed to Nantucket for the wedding. However, on the way, they were taken prisoner and robbed by a French shallop. Puella was born 10 October 1677[4] to Stephen Hussey and Martha Bunker.

The Gorhams moved to South Sea, Barnstable, Massachsetts and Shubael built a tavern. Shubael was judged to be not of a sound mind and son-in-law James Lovell, Jr. was appointed his guardian on 8 July 1749. Shubael died in 1750 in Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. Shubael’s will was dated 23 September 1748 and proved 7 August 1750.

Biography

In the settlement of his father's estate, dated March 7, 1676/7, Shubael was given £50 to be used to educate him for a learned profession, in addition to his own share, but instead he became a house-carpenter. He was a minor when his father died and, on March 5, 1683/4, he chose his older brother, James, as his guardian. Col. John Gorham's 'Wast Book' states that, when Shubael and his family and friends sailed to Nantucket for his marriage to Puella Hussey, the members of the wedding party were taken prisoner by a French shallop from Port Royal and were stripped of all their valuables. After his marriage, Shubael moved to South Sea in Barnstable Conty and built a tavern near Hyannis Port. In 1745, their younger son, Daniel Gorham, died of smallpox in London, England, unmarried, leaving a will dated Barnstable, January 24, 1740, which was proved there in January 1746. In it Daniel named his brother, George and his seven sisters, Abigail, Lydia, Hannah, Theodate, Desire, Ruth and Deborah. Daniel's inventory, which amounted to £2960-15-1 [a lot of money] included four rights to land in Gorhamtown, Maine. On July 8, 1749 Shubael Gorham's son-in-law, James Lovell, Jr., of Barnstable, gentleman, the husband of his daughter, Abigail, was appointed as Shubael's guardian after Shubael had been adjudged non compos mentis by the Inquisition of Selectmen. James Lovell was to care for Shubael's person as well as his estate. He was 80 years old at the time. Shubael Gorham, in his will dated September 23, 1748, proved August 7, 1750, gave all of his real estate to his only surviving son, George Gorham of Stamford, Connecticut. His personal estate was divided equally among his seven beloved daughters, the same as those named in son Daniel's will quoted above. His wife, Puella, was not mentioned and had probably died earlier. Deacon John Hinkley of Barnstable was named executor. Witnesses were Samuel Annable, Thomas Annable and Mary Bourn.  Shubael's real estate was appraised at £266 and his personal estate at £99.
