Stephen Hussey and Martha Bunker
Stephen Hussey was born in 1630 or 1632[1] to Christopher Hussey and Theodate Bachiler. It is said that his grandfather Stephen Bachiler’s first duties as a minister in America was to baptize two infants, Thomas Newhall and Stephen Hussey. Thomas was given to Bachiler first but he insisted on baptizing Stephen first. The accuracy of the story, however, is questionable.
Stephen went to sea as young man and settled for a while in Barbados, becoming a city official there. There, he acquired some property and purchased slaves whom he brought with him to Nantucket. He was brought to the court in Hampton, New Hampshire in 1668 “for disturbing the congregation on the Lord’s day and reviling Mr. Cotton”. In 1671, his father deeded his interest in Nantucket to Stephen and his brother John. By May 1673, Stephen had permanently settled at Nantucket. John sold his interest to Stephen in 1694.
He was influenced by Quakers in Barbados. However, he still owned slaves and was litigious, despite the Quakers’ disapproval of these practices. He was in court, including for charges of disrupting both court and church services and to sue the constable for taking his rum (Stephen ended up being fined for smuggling the rum and for contempt of court).
Stephen married Martha Bunker 8 October 1676 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Returning from the wedding, the ship Stephen and Martha were sailing in “encountered a hostile French privateer laying off Nantucket harbor”. The wedding party watched from the shore. Meanwhile, the cake burnt and a drunken Indian broke his glass whiskey bottle in the punchbowl by accident. All of this led Martha to declare that “the very heavens and stars were against us.” Martha was born in 1st 11 month 1656 to George and Jane Bunker.
Stephen was a yeoman and freeholder of Sherburne and a representative to the General Court. He lived first on the south side of Nantucket harbor and built three houses on Nantucket. Stephen and his brother-in-law, John Swain, refused to swear an oath of office because of their Quaker beliefs and were refused an office. He entertained a Quaker preacher from Barbados, Thomas Story, and hosted a meeting of the Society of Friends in 1704. Stephen was one of organizers and petitioners when the Society of Friends was organized in Sherburne in 1708.
Stephen’s will is dated 17th 5th month 1716. He died 2nd 2 month (2 Apr) 1718 in Nantucket, Massachusetts and was buried in the Friends Burial Ground, Nantucket, Massachusetts. Martha died 21st 9 month (21 Nov) 1744 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.Stephen and Martha's children are:

- Bachelor Hussey, born 18th 2 mo (18 Feb) 1684, married Abigail Hall 11th 10 mo (11 Oct) 1704 in Nantucket, one of the trustees of a loan received by Nantucket Island from the General Court in 1721, a Quaker preacher, “engaged in coasting or West India trade”, moved to Biddeford, York, Maine in 1737, died intestate, his estate was settled 29 Dec 1763.

The Reverend Stephen Batchelor, with his family, arrived at Boston on Thursday, the fifth of June. He came in the ship William and Francis, captain Thomas, which sailed from London on the ninth of March, with about sixty passengers. He immediately came to Lynn, where his daughter resided, and fixed his abode here. He was now 71 years of age. In his company were six persons who had belonged to a church with him in England; and of those he constituted a church at Lynn, to which he admitted such as were desirous of becoming members, and immediately commenced the exercise of the ministerial duties, without installation. One of his first ministrations was to baptize four children, born before his arrival; two of whom, Thomas Newhall and Stephen Hussey, were born the same week. He was born at Lynn, Mass., being the second child born at that place, and the first baptized, his grandfather, Stephen Batchelder, performing the ceremony.
He was for a time at Barbadoes, West Indies, and married late in life, for those times.
1671, 10, 23. He and his brother John received the deed of Nantucket lands, etc., already noted, and perhaps about this time he came to Nantucket to live.
1686, 1, 18. Received deed from Jeptha, Indian Sachem, of a tract on Nantucket, giving him therefor a valuable quantity of goods. Witnesses, John and Stephen Swain.
1694, 6, 4. Bought of his brother, John Hussey of Hampton, all the latter’s interest in Nantucket lands, etc., which their father had deeded them. Consideration, £55. Witnesses, Benjamin Swett, James Shangan, Christopher Hussey.
1715, 9, 10. Deeds to son Batchelor, for love and affection, etc., “one full, complete quarter of that share of land, which I bought of my father Christopher, containing one full, complete twenty-fifth of the island of Nantucket.”
1716, 7, 17. Will, proved 1718, 5, 13. Executors, sons Silvanus, Batchelor, George. Witnesses, Barnabas Gardner, Richard Swain, Richard Macy, Ruth Gardner. He calls himself yeoman, and says: “The great and weighty concern incumbent upon all mankind is the consideration of their future estate to be considered in the first place, and in the second place to endeavor to leave what they cannot carry with them, so to be disposed of as to avoid contests and janglings, in order to which I have made many wills heretofore, which I do hereby declare to be null and void, and that this and no other is my last will and testament.” To his wife Martha, all land, stock and housing on Nantucket during her life, and to her absolutely the household goods and negro woman “Sarah.” To son George all housing on Nantucket after decease of mother, except that Silvanus shall have use of one-half the warehouse. After wife’s decease the cattle and sheep are to be divided to three sons, according as they have land or privilieges on the island. To son Silvanus, negro boy “Mark.” To daughter Theodate, negro girl “Dorothy.” Son Silvanus to give sister Mary Worth, £30; sister Abigail howes £20; and sister Theodate, £17, when 18 or married. Son George to pay Theodate, £97; one-half within nine months of the time she is 18 or married, and other half within twelve months next ensuing the nine months.

Stephen Hussey wrote his will “17th, 5th month [August 17], 1716. It read as follows:
The Last Will and Testatment of Stephen Hussey of the Island Of Nantucket in the providence of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, Yeoman, is as followeth:
The great and weighty Concern Incumbent upon all mankind is the Consideration of their future Estate to be Considered in the first place and in the second place to Endevor to leave what they Cannot Carry with them so to be disposed of as to avoid Contests and Janglings In order to which I have made many wills heretofore which I do hereby declare to be all Null and Void and that this and no other is my last will and Testament.
And first I will that all my Just debts be well and tuly paid within Some Convenient time after my decease by my Executors hereafter Named.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Martha Hussey all my land and Stock and housing on the Island of Nantucket for and during her natural life. I do also give her my sd. wife a Negro woman named Sarah and all my household goods for ever for her to dispose of them according to her own discretion.
Item: I give and devise unto my Son George Hussey and to his heirs and assigns for ever all my housing on the Island of Nantucket after his mother’s decease Excepting that I will my son Silvanus Shall have the use of half of the warehouse as often as he hath occasion thereof.
Item: I will that after my wifes’ decease all my stock of Cattle and Sheep on the Island of Nantucket be Divided among my Three Sons according to the land or privilege they have on sd. Island.
Item: I give unto my Son Silvanus a Negro boy named Mark.
Item: I give unto my Daughter Theodata a Negro girl Named Dorothy.
Item: I will that my Son Silvanus Hussey do well and truly pay to his Sister Mary Worth the Sum of Seventy pounds Currant Money in this province within one year after my decease and Seven pound More to his Sister Theodata Within one year after She Shall arrive to the age of Eighteen Years or Marriage.
Item: I will that my Son Bachelor Hussey do well and truly pay to my Daughter Puella Gorham the Sum of Thirty pounds of like Currant Money within one year of my decease and Twenty pounds of like Money to my Daughter Abigail Howes within one year after my Decease and Seventeen pounds like money to his Sister Theodata within one year after She Shall arrive at the age of Eighteen years or Marriage.
Item: I will that my Son George do well and truly pay unto his Sister Theodata the Sum of Ninety Seven pounds of Like Currant Money of this province the one half thereof within Nine Months after She Shall arrive to the age of Eighteen years or Marriage and the other half within Twelve Months Next Ensuing the Nine Months.
I give all my Law Books unto my Son Bachelor Hussey for the use of his Son Stephen Hussey when he Shall arrive to the age of twenty one years.
And Lastly I make and ordain my three Sons, Silvanus, Bachelor and George Joynt Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I the sd. “At a Court of Probate held at York for ye County of York the Ninth Day of July A.D. 1761.
The annexed Report of a Division of ye real Estate of Batchelor Hufsey late of Biddeford in Said County deceased Intestate being presented to me the Subscriber Judge of the Probates under Bath for my Approbacion.
I do hereby approve and allow of this Same So far as it relates to the Estate of Said Deceased lying within the County of York aforesaid and do also take into the Said Division on the apprized Value of a certain piece of Land formerly be+longing to Said Deceased lying in Sherborne in the County of Nantucket which the Said Batchelor gave by Deed of Gift to his Daughter Huldah, and sons apprized by a Committee under Oath at the Sum of Sixteen pounds lawful money as appears by a Certificate of the Same under ye hand of Abishai Folger Esq. a Justice of ye peace of Said County.
And I do hereby order and Decree that ye Several Tracts of Land and Buildings thereon together with the Salt marsh and Thatch beds lying in the County of York and being the estate of the Said Batchelor as mentioned in the said report be Set off afsigned to Stephen Hufsey Ebenezer Hufsey Paul Hufsey and Sylvanus Hufsey Surviving Sons of ye Said Intestate to them their Heirs Afsigns in equal Shares and in Severalty forever
Provided that the Said Stephen Ebenezer Paul Sylvanus their Heirs Executors or administrators pay or cause to be paid unto ye other Heirs of the Said Deceased or to their legal Representation the Several Sums of Money to them respectively by this my

To the Heirs or legal Representatives of John Hufsey Deceased eldest Son of the Said Intestate one hundred pounds twelve shillings lawful money.

Hufsey Eighty Acres of Land and the Dwelling Houfes together with the one half of the Island Commonly Called Wood Island and Ten Acres of Thatch Beds lying in the Town of Biddeford Purchafed of Pendleton Fletcher Gentleman Deceafed and Twelve acres of Salt Marsh Lying in Arundel being the whole of the Real Estate of Said Batchelor Hufsey Deceafed to be Eqully Divided between them their Heirs or Afigns in Quantity and Quality they Paying the Several Sums Due to the respective Heirs Hereafter mentioned.
2. We Order and appoint the aforesaid Stephen Hufsey Ebenezer Hufsey Paul Hufsey and Sylvanus Hufsey to pay to the Heirs of John Hufsey Deceafed who was Eldest Son of the Said Deceafed the Sum of Ninety Seven Pounds and Nine pence.
3. We Order the Said Stephen Hufsey Ebenezer Hufsey Paul Hufsey and Sylvanus Hufsey to Pay to the Heirs of Mary Swain Deceafed one of the Daughters of the Said Batchelor Hufsey Deceafed the Sum of Forty Eight Pounds Six Shillings and foure pence half penny.
4. We Order the Said Stephen Hufsey Ebenezer Hufsey Paul Hufsey and Sylvanus Hufsey to Pay to the Heirs of Jedidah Coffin Deceafed one of the Daughters of the Said

Recorded Lib. 11, Fol[i]o 150 Simon Frost, Reg[istra]r”......In (Sylvanus Hussey's) will probated March 6, 1767 he named his sons William Hussey and Christopher Hussey his executors. Witnesses to the will were Matthew Barnard and Jethro Folger, Jr.
To his sons Obed Hussey, Jonathan Hussey, Christopher Hussey, William Hussey, Bachelor Hussey, Nathaniel Hussey, Sylvanus Hussey, Jr., George Hussey and Joseph Hussey he left to each “the house they each lived in.” The house of Jonathan Hussey located in Dartmouth, Massachusetts was combined with a farm there. He left three additional houses to William Hussey under the terms of the will.
To his grandsons Stephen Hussey and Daniel Hussey, sons of the deceased Daniel Hussey, he left a “dwelling house to be equally theirs.” He also directed that the home occupied by the widow of Daniel Hussey, his brother, “be settled amongst her children as the Judge of Probate may direct.” He thus gave away 13 houses in all, specifying that the old homestead he occupied at the time of his death go to his youngest child, Joseph Hussey.
According to “One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families” to different children he gave shares in Old or Middle Wharf, North Wharf, lands, creatures, trading stock of goods, book debts, notes, bonds, mortgages, lands in Dartmouth and Martha’s Vineyard, new storehouse, tryhouse on the beach, share in the ropewalk lately built, new brig now building at Scituate and residue of interests in vessels and shipping.”
To daughters, Rachel Hussey Coleman and Hepzibah Hussey Coleman, he left “a riding chaise equally, and to each of them one cow’s commons, and 200 pounds; and all household goods, except what was reserved for son, Joseph.”
To his son William Hussey he left his wearing apparel. To his daughter-in-law Sarah Jenkins Hussey he left 200 pounds “for bringing up her children.” To his grandsons Benjamin Hussey and Obed Hussey, Jr. he left “50 pounds apiece.” To his granddaughters Elizabeth Hussey Coffin and Eunice Hussey Worth he left 20 pounds each. To his grandson, Stephen Hussey he gave “six cow’s commons and 200 pounds.”
To his son George Hussey, in addition to the homestead, he gave also “the shop south of the house, one-half share in North Wharf, one-half share in Old or Middle Wharf, one-half of a lot at Pawkamo; and to him, with six brothers, all real estate and creatures not otherwise disposed of; to him, with four brothers, trading stock of goods, money, book debts, bonds and notes; to him, with three brothers and testator’s grandson, Seth Jenkins Hussey, “land at Martha’s Vineyard and Dartmouth, and land to the eastward,” and to him, with three brothers, all residue of shipping interest; and also to him, with three brothers, all interest in ropewalk and mortgage deeds. To “kinsman”, Joseph Marshall, son of Joseph Marshall, a silver tankard [large cup with hinged lid], silver porringer [porridge dish], household goods and 20 pounds.
