Savage's Genealogical Dictionary
Swain, Volume 4
JOHN, Nantucket, probably son of Richard the first, had John born 1 September 1664, by tradition the first male born there; Stephen, 21 November 1666; Sarah, 13 July 1670; Joseph, 17 July 1673; Elizabeth 17 May 1676; Benjamin, 5 July 1679; and Hannah; Patience; and Mary; without dates, but the last named is thought to be the eldest of all; all perhaps by Mary, daughter of Nathaniel Wyer, but we are not sure of more than that he died 1717; and is said to have been born 1633, but I doubt the report.Source: Savage, James, A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1990 (originally published Boston, 1860-1862).
Osborne's One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families
He (John Swain) and his sons John, Joseph and Benjamin, and son-in-law Joshua Sevolle, lived on farms in that section of Nantucket called Polpis. There also lived with him another John Swain, who came from England when young, and who to avoid confusion of names, was always called “John England”.
His will was proved Jan. 27, 1717. The executors were his sons John, Jos. and Benj. Witnesses were Wm. Worth, John Folger, Robt. Long and Moses Giles. To sons John, Jos. and Benj, and daugh. Eliz. Sevolle, his stock of cattle and sheep, equally; according to their two portions of land given each of them by me. To son Benj., a barn. To daugh. Mary Nason, 5s., and to daughters Sarah, Hannah, Patience and son Stephen, each 5 s. Dwelling house and household goods to rest of the children, with all money and plate to be divided equally between them, viz., all my children, “I mean to give it to John Swain, Jos. Swain, Benj. Swain and Eliz. Sevolle.”Source: Austin, John Osborne, One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families, MA: Privately printed, 1893.
