Johann Michael Klunk and Anna Christina Eckstein

Citing this biography: Boyd, Michelle, "Johann Michael Klunk and Anna Christina Eckstein," article, Olive and Eliza, last accessed [current date]."

Johann Michael Klunk was born about 1729 and was the son of Johann Peter Klunk and Anna Magdalena Treuer.  He was an Erzgräber (ore miner) from Fischbach, Birkenfeld, Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany. The fact that Johann Michael was mining ore points to the Fischbach in the Birkenfeld area. According to Stefan Eberhard, "As there was ore-mining in Monzelfeld (copper, some silver and ore) and not coal-mining like in the Saarbrücken-Fischbach there should be certitude about the Fischbach at the river Nahe."

Johann Michael married Anna Christina Eckstein 22 Feb 1757 in Monzelfeld, Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany. Christina was christened 16 Oct 1738 in Morscheid-Riedenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, the daughter of Johann Michael Eckstein and Anna Christina Quint.

The family arrived in the colony of Schäfer, Saratov, Russia 1 August 1766 and settled there. When he settled in this colony, Johann Michael was listed as a farmer.

As for the family's religion, it seems to have varied. Johann Michael first appears marrying in a Catholic church. It was noted that Anna Christina had previously converted to Catholicism.  Stefan Eberhard gives further insight: "In case of the Eckstein-Quint vagrants there are two additional problems. The vagrants roamed around an sometimes they did not remember the christian name of their parents exactly.  The pastors (reverends) did not like to make the marriages as they did not receive enough  money; they did not have the correct informations about day and place of birth, the Christian names, the correct writing of the names etc. As no one was allowed to marry twice, the pastors had a lot of writing with the other parishes and the episcopal office. They did not like that.  Sometimes our ancestors changed religion (Lutheran <> Catholic)...As there was the rule: cuius regio eius religio (Whose realm, his religion) some of the Quints, Ecksteins , Kluncks, Treuers can have been christianed and  married in a different religion.  As the area in the Hunsrück was partially Lutheran and the river-valley of the Moselle mainly Catholic, a lot of church book entries can not be found in the (catholic) episcopal library."

Later, the Klunks appear in the records of a Lutheran church, having a daughter christened. In Russia, at the time of their settlement in their new colony, Johann Michael is listed as Lutheran.

Michael and Christina’s children are:

1 Anna Elisabeth Klunk, born 24 Sep 1758, christened 27 Sep 1758 in Niederwörresbach, Birkenfeld, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, married Johann Peter Bauer.

Husband: Johann Peter Bauer, b. abt. 1756 in Winterbach, Kreis St. Wendel, Saarland, Germany to Johann Peter Bauer and Elisabeth —.

Children: Catharina Bauer (m. 1) Johann Peter Hoffman and 2) Anton Graf), Anna Elisabetha Bauer, and Maria Elisabetha Bauer.

2 Michael Klunk, christened 26 Sep 1761 in Fischbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

3 Susanna Margarethe Klunk, christened 22 Mar 1763 in Niederwörresbach, Birkenfeld, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

3 Johann Andreas Klunk, born about 1765 in Birkenfeld, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

They also probably had the following sons:

4 Johann Jacob Klunk, born 6 Aug 1760, christened 10 Aug 1760 in Werlau, Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany. Werlau is 54.5 miles (87.8 km) from Monzelfeld and 52 miles (83.7 km) from Niederwörresbach, so it is not close. However, since Anna Christina came from a vagrant background and the names of the parents in the records are right, it may be possible that the couple wandered a little further from the Birkenfeld area and had a child there.

5 Johannes Klunk, born about 1767 in Schäfer, Saratov, Russia, married Magdalena Nikolaus.

Wife: Magdalena Nikolaus.

6 August Klunk, born about 1771, of Schäfer, Saratov, Russia.
