Johann Michael Eckstein was probably the son of Peter
Eckstein and Anna Elisabetha Wottsack. Some sources cite his
parents as Nikolaus and Elisabeth Eckstein, however. According to Dieter
Eckstein, "Urbar is specified in the FB Bruttig Fankel (#0479) as a
place of birth. Perhaps and also likely: Urbar near Koblenz. In the
church book 1 of Niederburg is mentioned no birth of a Eckstein. Only
the marriage of Peter Eckstein and Anna Elisabeth Wottsackin is
registered for 1706 there (Q: archives of the Roman Catholic Diocese of
Trier on the 11.2.2015)"
Johannes Michael married first Anna Christina Quint 1 Oct 1727
in Bruttig, Cochem-Zell, Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany. Anna Christina
was the daughter of Johann
Jakob Quint and Anna Barbara Kirchiners. She died 24 May
1759 in Cröv, Bernkastel-Wittlich, Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany.
Johannes married second Anna Rapp 27 November 1759 in Liersburg,
Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Anna was born 26 March 1734 in Lieser,
Bernkastel-Wittlich, Rheinland-Palatinate to Heinrich Rapp and Anna
Gertrudis Licht.
Johann Michael died in 1776 in Monzelfeld, Bernkastel-Wittlich,
Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany.
The Ecksteins were listed as Vagant (vagrants). Stefan Eberhard offers
some insight into the lives of vagrants in this time and place: "These
vagrant families lived in poverty and [earned] their money as
broom-makers, whitesmiths, basket makers etc. As there was probably some
petty crime, the families had a bad reputation. As they had no right of
abode, it was not easy for them to end their vagrancy."
He mentioned the obstacles the vagrants faced when marrying: "The
pastors (reverends) did not like to make the marriages as they did not
receive enough money; they did not have the correct informations
about day and place of birth, the Christian names, the correct writing
of the names etc. As no one was allowed to marry twice, the pastors had
a lot of writing with the other parishes and the episcopal office. They
did not like that. Sometimes our ancestors changed religion
(Lutheran <> Catholic)."
Historians add more details: “The German underworld was an underworld of
outcasts, of people who by trade, occupation, lifestyle or origin had no
place in the pre-industrial hierarchy, the ‘society of orders’
(ständische Gesellschaft), but lived, whether by necessity or by choice,
in its interstices, beyond its bounds. The first and widest circle of
the underworld was formed by vagrants and itinerants, the people,
forming perhaps between 5 and 10 per cent of the population in normal
times, who lived on the road. The respectable traveler did not form part
of this group: merchants and travelling salesmen, messengers, wandering
journeymen seeking employment, all these had a fixed place to go to, and
were acceptable as part of urban society. At the lower end of the scale,
however, demobilized soldiers and Landsknechte, mercenaries, itinerant
entertainers, tinkers, knife-grinders, pedlars and other wanderers whose
living was precarious and bound to no particular fixed point, shaded off
imperceptibly into the underworld. The unskilled unemployed, the sick,
the disabled, above all, perhaps, the children of the itinerants—all
those unable to fall back on the resources of a guild or local community
in time of need—wandered instead from place to place, and were
frequently forced to rely on begging. On the road, too, could be found
those people who might have begun as relatively settled members of
society but who now kept on the move in order to evade the clutches of
the law.” (Evans, Richard J., “Introduction: The ‘Dangerous Classes’ in
Germany from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century,” from Evans,
Richard J. (ed.), The German Underworld: Deviants and Outcasts in
German History, Routledge, 1988 (reprint in 2015), pgs. 1-2.)
“Historians have found comments as far back as the early Middle Ages
associating poverty with beggary and crime. Outsiders and vagrants,
already recognized as potentially disruptive, were increasingly
demonized. By the early sixteenth century, population was on the
increase after the long slump that followed the plague pandemic of the
fourteenth century. Many worried that loose and ungoverned elements of
the population would foment crime, and vagrants were frequently arrested
for theft and other offenses that most modern societies deem
petty…Increased severity against outsiders was widespread in the late
Middle Ages and the early modern period. By the fifteenth century,
cities were laying increasing restrictions on wandering beggars, tightly
limiting or even forbidding their entry. The use of banishment by many
localities as a punishment for lesser crimes tended to associate
wandering with criminality in the minds of many. Similarly criminal was
the reputation of unemployed mercenary soldiers, left without resources
in intervals of peace and bred to violence…Vagrants were legally
suspicious and could be subject to questioning without reference to
particular crimes…Of course, all this was not just a matter of
discourse: soldiers and vagrants did form a substantial portion of those
who engaged in violent lawbreaking.” (Wiltenberg, Joy, Crime and
Culture in Early Modern Germany, University of Virginia Press:
2013.)

Rough translation: On 10 September 1772, M. Petry seized the tableware
of Nik. Eckstein at the request of Fr. Banner in addition to
accessories and effects for 3 days due to a brawl that Eckstein had
had with the daughter of Banner. All local court lay judges were
instructed that wherever in the Baldenau and Hunolstein offices the
"Dippenflicker" should be encountered, he should be taken into custody
with his dishes until they received new instructions from Bernkastel's
Council. However, Mrs. Banner was asked immediately to inform the
office of the confiscation. If an arrangement of the Deputy was not
present in 3 days, the seizure should be illegal.
