Guntram von Biedenfeld and Metze von Buches

Guntram von Biedenfeld was born about 1458 in Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Peter von Biedenfeld and -- Löw von Steinfurth. He was also called Gunther, which may be a variation of Guntram and became known as Guntram der Ältere (the elder) and der Älteste (the eldest (of the family)). Guntram was an "Edelkn. (Junker)." Edelkn. is an abbreviation for Edelknecht, meaning a servant-knight, or ministerial. Legally, ministerales were not free. They could not move and, in many cases, marry without permission and they might be required to provide military service (either personal service or funding), fulfill administrative duties, and so on for their lord. However, they were considered nobility and, therefore, higher in social status than even a free commoner. A Junker was a young or lesser nobleman.

Guntram married Metze von Buches in 1490. Metze was born in 1468 in Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Eberhard von Buches and Gute von Schwalbach. Until 1482, they lived in Berghofen, Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, Germany.

Guntram was recorded as a Burgmann (a nobleman charged with the castle guard, roughly equivalent to the English castellan) of Friedberg, Wetteraukreis, Hesse, Germany in 1476. In 1479, he was a "landgr. Diener gegen Sachsen" (Saxon landgrave's servant), enfeoffed with Berghofen and Allendorf, both in Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, Germany.

From 1482 on, Guntram and his family resided in Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He and Otto Winter jointly held the fiefdom of Hallenberg since 1485 (suceeding Philipp von Biedenfeld). He also jointly held the fiefdom of Flensungen, Vogelsbergkreis, Hesse, Germany and Laubach, Gießen, Hesse, Germany with Ruprecht, Friedrich, and Rudolf von Biedenfeld since 1423 (succeeding another Guntram von Biedenfeld). Guntram died about 1534 (after 9 June 1533).

Guntram and Metze's children are:

1 Zacharias von Biedenfeld, born 1 January 1509, married Margarethe Bang in 1540, an Edelmann (nobleman or knight) of Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, a Burgmann in Battenberg, Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, Germany 1534-1575, enfeoffed with Wetter, Marburg-Biedenkopf, Hesse, Germany and Berghofen and Allendorf, both in Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, Germany in 1551, paid a Bürgerschilling (citizen's fee) and "Geschoß u. Feuergeld" (floor and fire tax) to Hallenberg in 1557, sold his rights to "der kölnische Grafschaft Züschen" (the Cologne county of Züschen, Schwalm-Eder-Kreis, Hesse, Germany) to Hermann von Viermünden in 1553, mentioned in 1559 as the Herr (lord) in Berghofen, Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, Germany, died 19 Sep1589 in Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Wife: Margarethe Bang, b. in 1514 in Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Christian Bang.

2 Melchior von Biedenfeld, an Edelmann in Flensungen, Vogelsbergkreis, Hesse, Germany, jointly held the fiefdom of Flensungen in 1551, a "hessischer 'Diener von Haus aus'" in 1553 (a Diener von Haus aus was a noble who contracted to supply troops to a prince for a retainer fee).

2 Theodosius von Beidenfeld, also called Dosing for short, an Edelmann in in Hallenberg, Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, a hess. Hauptmann (Hessian captain) in the Schmalkaldic War of 1546 (fought between Emperor Charles Vof the Holy Roman Empire and the Lutheran princes and towns of the Schmalkaldic League, including Landgrave Philip of Hesse, indicating that Theodosius fought for the League - Charles V prevailed until a second revolt in 1552), held a fiefdom within Hesse in 1553, called the "vornehmster Diener d. Grafen zu Waldeck" (most distinguished servant of Philipp IV, Count of Waldeck) in 1555.

Note: "The Gießen family book part 1 (1575 - 1730) by Otto Stumpf was published in three volumes by the Upper Hessian History Association as early as 1976. But these books have long been out of print. For reasons of space, the sponsorship information, which is often so important to clarify the family connections, was also missing. These were here by Marion Wächter, who unfortunately died far too early, with the support of Dr. Brake from the Giessen city archive also added. Some genealogical information on people from the Giessen emigration society has also been incorporated."

Note: "Unfortunately, the original church book from 1684-1875 was not available for the creation of the Lang-Göns family book. Therefore, the backup film of the church book mapping by Pastor Wahl, stored in the Giessen University Library, was used because the original mapping itself can no longer be found. But already for the filming some index cards must have been missing. The different manuscripts also suggest that the pastor was supported by the confirmands. Any information before 1684 was kindly sent to me by Mr. Hartmut Klein."
