William Smith and Katherine Browne

William Smith was the son of John Smith (by either his first wife, Cristyn --, or his second wife, Cicely --). William married first -- -- and second Katherine Brown. Katherine was the daughter of -- Browne and Anne --.

William's will was written 29 October 1492 and proved 6 February 1492/3. He was a resident of Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England with properties elsewhere. Included in his will were a dye-house and a mill. He requested that his body be buried in the church in Stratford St. Mary by his father's body with a marble gravestone over him and marble "for the path with the same Aley that I shall lye in." He was buried in the church at Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England, according to the 1586 will of his great-grandson, William Smithe, gentleman, of Stratford St. Mary.

Katherine was called "Dame Katherin Smyth" in her daughter Jane's will and "Dame Katerine Smyth" in her son Robert's will. Her will was written 24 September 1511 and proved 12 January 1511/2. Amongst her bequests was her salt house with salt in Harwich, Essex, England, a violet gown and violet kirtle, and lands left her by her mother.

William and his first wife’s children are:

  1. John Smith the Elder, the eldest son of his father (according to his father's will), lived in Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England.
  2. Sir William Smith, priest of the parish of Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, England, will dated 5 September [unknown year] and 11 December 1540.
  3. Joan Smith, the eldest daughter of her father (according to her father's will), to be given money from her father's estate at her marriage.
  4. Thomas Smith, mentioned in his father's will.
William and Katherine's children are:
  1. John Smith the Younger, married Margaret --, will made 22 Dec 1533 and proved 12 Apr 1534, a resident of Erwarton, Suffolk, England.
  2. Sir Robert Smith, youngest son (according to his father's will), under the age of 16 in 1492, parson and curate of Erwarton, Suffolk, England, will dated 6 Oct1510 and proved 20 Oct 1510.
  3. Anne Smith, under the age of 20 in 1492, married -- Spregenall.
  4. Jane Smith, youngest daughter (according to her father's will), under the age of 14 in 1492, will proved 18 Jun 1510, bequeathed the money given to her by her father to buy a silver cross with the residue to her mother.
