John Kenrick and Anne Smith

Citing this biography: Boyd, Michelle, "John Kenrick and Anne Smith," article, Olive and Eliza, last accessed [current date]."

John Kenrick was born about 1606 (he being about 78, according to his will written in 1684), probably in England. He appears in records in New England starting in 11 August 1639, when he was admitted to the church at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Savage interpreted this to mean "that he had come, probably the former year, if not earlier, and there is no slight reason to think he came with Mather in the James from Bristol, 1630." He became a freeman in 1640.

John married first Anne Smith in about 1638. Anne also appears as Anna in records (these two names being interchangeable at the time). Anne's parents are not known but a deposition states that she had siblings Robert Smith and Mary (Smith) Torrey.

John sold a wharf he owned in Boston in 1652 "on the easterly side of the Town Dock, sometime called Tyng's wharf." The family subsequently moved to Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts (near Boston). Anne died 15th day 9th month 1656 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts and John married second Judith —.

The Kenricks moved to Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts in 1658, where John purchased 250 acres of land with a farmhouse and barn. The bridge crossing the Charles River near the house was given the name of "Kenrick's bridge." The wife of "Goodman Kenright" (probably Judith) was dismissed to the church at Newton from Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts on 11 September 1664.

John died 29 August 1686 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. John's will was dated 21 January 1684 and proved 23 September 1686. Judith died 23 August 1687 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts, according to The History of Newton and Savage.

John and Anne’s children are:

1 Hannah Kenrick, born 9th day 12th month 1639 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

2
John Kenrick, born 3rd day 8th month 1641 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, married Esther —, a selectman, freeman 1690, will made 1721, died 30 Sep 1721, buried in East Parish Burying Ground, Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

Wife: Esther —, b. abt. 1633, d. 14 Sep 1723, bur. East Parish Burying Ground, Newton.

4 Elijah Kenrick, born 18th day 8th month 1645 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, married Hannah Jackson, died 24 Oct 1680 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

Wife: Hannah Jackson,
b. 7 Jun 1644 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts to John and Margaret Jackson, m. 2) John Hyde 20 Jan 1683 (according to Savage).
