school at Rehoboth, Massachusetts after graduation, became a
minister at Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts in 1705 and the first
minister at Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1707, married Abiel
Adams 3 Sep 1707 in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts,
died 24 Dec 1723 in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, buried at
Falmouth Old Burying Ground, Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts.
“Probably Mr. Metcalf could not have got on with his parish had it
not been for a fund of good humor and gentleness well illustrated
in the story of his new wig. The old one was moth-eaten; so he
bought a new one in Boston which, being more modern, was somewhat
larger. Finding that it offended the ladies of the parish, he
submitted it to them in turn, asking each to snip off the lock
that offended her. All were satisfied but one, who objected on the
grounds of the second commandment. To which the parson replied
that he did not think that the commandment applied, since the wig
after this clipping was unlike anything else in Heaven above, or
on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth.”(Quotes and
several other details are from Colonial Collegians.) Wife: Abiel Adams, dau. of William and Alice (Bradford) Adams, m. 2) Isaac Chauncy, d. 30 Jul 1758 in Connecticut, bur. at Pink Cemetery, Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut. |
