Ebenezer Metcalf was born 14 December 1679 in Dedham, Norfolk,
Massachusetts to Jonathan Metcalf
and Hannah Kenrick. Ebenezer married Hannah Abell 28
April 1702 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut. Hannah was probably born
15 January 1679 to Benjamin
and Hannah Abell (according to The Abell Family in
America).
Ebenezer was established and confirmed the cornet of the troop of
Windham county, Connecticut in May of 1728. He was admitted to the
church at Lebanon, New London, Connecticut 3 November 1723.
Ebenezer’s will was written 3 April 1755 and probated 19 Nov 1755. The
inventory was taken 24 November 1755 and the estate was administered on
30 December. Hannah’s inventory was taken 13 Jul 1756. These probate
papers give a number of details of Ebenezer and Hannah’s life.
Ebenezer’s inventory indicates that the family lived in very comfortable
circumstances and includes a number of items, including over 30 cattle,
about nine horses, 28 sheep, five pigs (“shotes”), over 400 acres of
land, and silver, gold, and silk items, totaling £3,196 and 10 ½ d.
Hannah’s inventory included some gold and silver jewelry and
accoutrements, as well as a good-sized wardrobe that included seven
gowns (including silk, damask, and linen) and other articles (silk,
velvet, etc.), amongst other items.
Ebenezer was a slave owner. Among the bequests given by Ebenezer to
Hannah was “also my Negro Woman Moll to be hers & at
her Dispose During her Naturall Life.” Later in the will, Ebenezer
states that after Hannah’s death, Moll was to “have Liberty to Live with
Which of my Sons she will & that son whom she Choose for her Master
& who takes Her shall be Chargeable with her Support &
Maintenance, if She Should become Sick Infirm or Useless.” In the
administration, Moll was listed as given to Hannah. There is no known
mention of her in records other than Ebenezer’s probate papers, so it is
unknown whom she chose or anything else of her fate. Moll was mentioned
(and appraised as property) in Ebenezer’s inventory, as were two other
slaves: “1 Negro Man, Chrismas” and “Also one negro man
named Toby Judged To be worth nothing but to be a Charge
& incumbrance To the Estate.” In the administration of Ebenezer’s
estate, Ebenezer, Benjamin, and Timothy were each given “1/3” of
Chrismas. I am not sure if this means that they shared Chrismas’ labor
between them or if Chrismas was sold and the money split between them.
Toby was probably elderly, ill, or incapacitated at the time of the
inventory. He is not mentioned in the administration.
Ebenezer ended the will with his hopes and desires for his children:
“And it is my Dying Request & Charge to all my Children that they
Live in the fear of God, & in peace & Love one with another,
& never Contend with one another about the Estate which I have left
Among them, which I have Distributed with sincere affection to them all
According to my best Judgement.”
Ebenezer died 15 November 1755 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.
Hannah died 17 June 1756 in Connecticut. They were buried in the Old
Cemetery, Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.
Ebenezer and Hannah’s children are:
1 | Ebenezer

Lebanon, New London, Connecticut) 7 Oct 1725 in Lebanon, New

Johnson Cemetery, Bozrah, New London, Connecticut. Wife: Sarah Abell, b. 2 Mar 1704 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut to John and Rebeckah (Sluman) Abell, d. 27 Apr 1781 in Connecticut, bur. in Johnson Cemetery, Bozrah, New London, Connecticut. |

5 | Joseph Metcalf, born 8
Jul 1711 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, died 18 Dec 1758 in
Connecticut, buried in the Old Cemetery, Lebanon, New London,
Connecticut. Joseph was left land, a mare, and a cow in his
father’s will and it was stipulated that he “Shall have his
Liberty, to live either of his brothers Benjamin or Jabez which he
shall choose & Whichsoever of these my Sons he Shall Choose to
Live with, Shall have the use & Improvement of the Land, which
I have given to Joseph as Above for Maintainance & Comfortable
Support of the sd Joseph & the keeping his Mare & Cow
& their Increase and I Leave it as my Charge to my Sons, that
whichsoever of them he shall Choose to Live with, He Do take Good
& Prudent Care of him & make Comfortable Provisions for
him.” Why Ebenezer left such careful instructions for Joseph is
not known. It is likely that Joseph was in some way disabled,
though not of a sort or to the degree that Ebenezer ruled out the
possibility of his one day raising a family, as he stated that the
land would be left to his lawful heirs, if he ever had any. |
6 | Lucy Metcalf, born 25
Dec 1713 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, baptized 29 Jan 1713

History of Norwich, Connecticut
“Thomas Baldwin, Husbandman,” the second son of John the proprietor,
married Sarah, daughter of John Calkins. He died Sept. 16, 1741, in
the 80th year of his age. His farm was three miles distant from the
town-plot, and now forms a part of the large domain of Asa Fitch,
Esq., of Fitchville Bozrah. Though he himself made a cross for his
signature, in the course of three or four generations we find among
his descendants, divines, lawyers, physicians, scholars, and
statesmen. He had four daughters, who passed in due time into other
families,—Baldwin of Lebanon, Birchard, Backus, and Post; and four
sons, viz., John, who married Lucy Metcalf of Lebanon, and his family
removing to the Cohos country, assisted in peopling the New Hampshire
grants; Thomas, Ebenezer, and Jabez.
