A young man by the name of Jonathan Bunker, living near Mr. (Samuel)
Sewall, experienced religion under the teachings of Mr. Sewall and
Rev. Jotham Sewall, as did also Mr. (John) Trask. They embraced fully
the creed of their patrons and united with the Congregational Church
at Farmington. About 1797 Mr. Bunker married and moved to Industry.
These three persons formed the nucleus of the Congregational Church in
this town.

On the 21st day of January, 1802, a little more than a year after his
first visit, Rev. Jotham Sewall, accompanied by his brother-in-law,
Mr. Samuel Sewall, a licentiate, visited Industry and held a meeting
for the purpose of organizing a church. A society was formed,
consisting, as we learn from Rev. Jotham Sewall’s Memoirs, of eight
members, among whom were William Allen, Sr., John Trask and wife, and

ROYALTON TOWNSHIP HISTORY
…
In 1817, Jonathan Bunker, from the State of New York, located upon
section eleven, where he had received a tract of one hundred and fifty
acres from Gideon Granger in exchange for one of fifty acres near
Palmyra, New York, his former home.
Mr. Bunker belonged to a historical family which gave its name to the
celebrated Bunker Hill. Two of his uncles had also participated in the
battle fought on Breed's Hill, to which the former name has been
given, where one was killed and the other wounded.
Ephraim Moody, a neighbor in New York, accompanied Bunker to the West.
The journey was made in a sleigh drawn by a pair of horses, of which
each owned one. Moody stopped short of Royalton, leaving Bunker to go
on alone. The latter reached his newly acquired property in the
morning, and by night he had put up a shanty. During the following
eight months he labored there alone, clearing and cultivating his
land, and when at the end of that time his family came out, they found
a comfortable log house and crops well advanced.
Mr. Bunker, during his solitary experience, used to be frequently
troubled by wild beasts, and more than once his shanty, which was
always open, received marauding visits from bears. He was, however, a
fearless man, and far from being frightened away by the bears and
wolves; he hunted and trapped them with great success. He was an
expert ropemaker, and for some time, during his early days in
Royalton, supplied Cleveland with about all the white rope used there.
For its manufacture he used flax raised upon his farm, and also hemp
purchased from Mr. Weddell, of Cleveland. Mr. Bunker also had a
nursery of four hundred apple trees, from which many of the present
orchards of Royalton were supplied. He had a family of nine children,
and died in 1844, aged eighty-two.
…
It is said that there was not a single framed dwelling house in
Royalton, until 1827, when Jonathan Bunker erected one.

From Tasman to Marsden
1802.
Between 30th April and 10th May, three whalers—the Speedy, the
Venus, and the Britannia—arrived at Sydney, and
Governor King submitted to their captains a list of questions which
elicited not very much information. They agreed that the route by the
Cape of Good Hope was the easier on vessel and crew; that off the
coast of New Zealand the weather was as favourable as on the coasts of
Peru and Chili, and that there was no material difference of time in
getting a cargo; and that whalers should come to Australasian waters
first and then fill up on the opposite coast. Considering they were
giving away dearly acquired information, the Governor had no occasion
to be disappointed with the replies. The three captains had been a
good while in these waters, Turnbull of the Britannia was on
his second whaling voyage, Quested of the Speedy had been
some considerable time on the coast, and Gardner of the Venus was
well on with his voyage.
King now regarded whaling on the coast “and off New Zealand" as
“established," and so wrote to Sir Joseph Banks under date 5th June,
the letter going in the whaler Speedy which cleared the following day.
Of the other ships mentioned in King's questions, the Britannia
cleared for England on 12th June. In addition to these, King reported
that four more were filling. These were the Venus, the Greenwich,
the General Boyd, and the Harriet, all of which
visited Sydney later on, and cleared for the fishing grounds again,
the first in June, and the others in August. Of these whalers the General
Boyd was American, and was the first of that nationality
reported “fishing" in these waters. She was a vessel of 302 tons and
was commanded by Owen Bunker.

Nantucket and the Whale-fishers
He [Captain William Cash] came of a seafaring ancestry, his grandfather, William Cash, being a whaleman, who was killed by a whale on the first voyage in which he had assumed the duties of master. He was a resident of Nantucket, and besides leaving a wife left also three children, two daughters and one son, Alexander Cash.

Women of the Sea
The Cash family of Massachusetts was well established. William was named for his grandfather, who had been killed by a whale on the first voyage in which he sailed as master. A resident of Nantucket, the grandfather left a wife, Phoebe Bunker Cash, two daughters, and one son, Alexander.*
*Captain William Cash had sailed away from Nantucket in 1796 as master of the whaler Leo of 217 tons. One day, probably in 1798, several whales were sighted, and Captain Cash was lowered in one of the longboats. At the first strike he was killed by a whale. His chief mate Joseph Allen then became the captain and after a long voyage the Leo returned successfully to Nantucket Island in 1800.
