Joseph Grimm was born about 1739 (according to the First Settlers List) or 1743 (according to the 1798 census) and was from Germany, either Isenburg (according to the Kulberg List) or Miltenberg (according to the First Settlers List). Joseph married first Christina Margaretha -- (b. abt. 1740). They arrived in Russia 4 July 1766, with their month-old baby Carl, from Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on board the English frigate Love and Unity. Joseph and his wife settled at Kamenka, Saratov, Russia 20 August 1767. Their son did not appear with them in this list and he may have died in the year between the family's arrival in Russia and their settlement in the colony. Joseph is listed as Catholic and a farmer.

Joseph married second Eva Maria Kloster. Eva Maria was born 8 May 1760 to Johann Adam Kloster and Maria Salome Zimmermann. She was baptized 11 May 1760 in Georgenhausen, Hesse, Germany. Eva Maria arrived in Russia at the age of seven 15 September 1766, along with her parents and siblings, on board the snow-brig Die Frau Dietrika. The Kloster family settled at Semenovka, Saratov, Russia 24 July 1767.
