Friedrich Jäckel and Maria Margaretha Wulff/Anna Maria Laber

Friedrich Jäkel was born in 1744 in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He was listed as Catholic and a farmer in 1766. His family name appears in Russian records as Jäkel, Eckel, Jeckel, Heckel, and so on.

Friedrich married Maria Margaretha Wulff 28 May 1765 in Rosslau, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Maria Margaretha was born about 1740. Rosslau was a common gathering place for those headed from Germany to Russia and a number of couples were married here). It is not known whether Maria Margaretha came from the same place as Friedrich and married him as they traveled towards Russia or if she came from an unknown place and met Friedrich along the way. However, it is interesting that a couple old enough to be her parents, Heinrich Wolf and Anna Katharina —, originating from Mannheim, settled in Graf. The possibility exists that Maria Margaretha was the daughter of this couple.

Friedrich and Maria Margaretha settled in Graf, Samara, Russia 10 June 1766.

Friedrich married second Anna Maria Lauber. Anna Maria was reportedly in her forties in the 1798 census (though her recorded age is said to be difficult to read) and was from Herzog, Samara, Russia, married first — Hofstetter.

In 1798, the Eckel family had lost their livestock to plague. To get by, they hired out as cattle herders in the colonies of Stahl am Karaman and Schwed. No records of an Anna Maria Laber has been found in the First Settlers List. If the illegible age was recorded or translated incorrectly and she was actually younger than her forties or she was inadvertently left off the list, she could be the daughter of Johann Friedrich Lauber and Eva Elisabeth —.

Friedrich was certainly the grandfather of Elisabetha Jaeckel, the wife of Gregorius Johannes Knoll. She would have been the daughter of Andreas (his son by Maria Margaretha) or his son Heinrich (his son by Anna Maria) but it has not been determined which of the two was her father.

Friedrich and Maria Margaretha’s children are:

1 Anna Maria Jaekel, born in about 1766 in Graf, Samara, Russia, married Nikolaus Obermann, was working in the colony of Louis (as was Nikolaus) in 1798.

Husband: Nikolaus Obermann, b. abt. 1759, probably in Germany, lived in Katherinenstadt, Russia.

2 Andreas Jaekel, born about 1773, probably in Graf, Samara, Russia, married Catharina Koller, died 1822 in Graf, Samara, Russia.

Wife: Catharina Koller, born about 1776 in Chasselois, Saratov, Russia, almost certainly to Peter Köhler and Elisabeth —, almost certainly present when the colony of Chasselois was destroyed by the Kirghiz (nomadic tribesmen who raided the colony) in 1785.

Children: Philipp Jaekel (m. 1) Agnes Billinger and 2) Elisabetha Krenzer), Anton Jaekel, Catharina Elisabetha Jaekel, Anna Jaekel, and Konrad Jaekel.

Friedrich and Anna Maria's children are:

3 Heinrich Jaekel, born about 1779, probably in Graf, Samara, Russia, married Anna Maria Donau 31 Jan 1805 in Rohleder parish, Samara, Russia, died in 1821.

Wife: Anna Maria Donau, perhaps born about 1784 in Graf, Samara, Russia to Franz Donad and Christina —.

Children: Maria Elisabetha Jaekel, Anna Catharina Jaekel, Nicolaus Jaekel, and Teresa Jaekel.

4 Barbara Jaekel, born about 1783.

5 Catharina Jaekel, born about 1785, married Lorenz Hein 7 Feb 1809 in Rohleder parish, Samara, Russia, died 9 Jul 1848 in Graf, Samara, Russia of cholera.

Husband: Lorenz Hein, b. abt. 1788 to Michael Hein and Elisabetha Frank, d. 29 Feb 1839 in Graf, Samara, Russia of fever. According to the 1850 Graf census, Lorenz was born in Chasselois, Russia. However, that colony was destroyed in 1785 and the survivors, of which his father was one, settled in other colonies. Assuming Lorenz's birth year is accurate, Lorenz was more likely born in Graf.

Child: Elisabetha Hein, Anna Maria Hein (m. Peter Herrhauser), and (son) Hein(?).

6 Maria Magdalena Jaekel, born 29 Dec 1791 in Graf, Samara, Russia, baptized 31 Dec 1791, had an illegitimate child in 1815 (presumably, the father was -- Wintermeier), perhaps the Magdalena Jegel who was married to Johannes Schoenberger by 1808 (date of the baptism of Magdalena Schoenberger).

Possible husband: Johannes Schoenberger.

Illegitimate child: Johannes Wintermeier.

Possible child: Magdalena Schoenberger.

7 Maria Theresia Jaekel, born 28 Mar 1796 in Graf, Samara, Russia, baptized 30 Mar 1796, died 23 Dec 1796 in Louis, Samara, Russia.

8 Probably Anna Jegel, had an illegitimate child in 1808 (father unknown). While there are no records connecting her as Friedrich's daughter, there are no other families by the name of Jaekel/Jegel in the area and the witnesses to her daughter's baptism was Heinrich and his wife, Anna, suggesting a strong tie between Anna and this family. While it is uncertain which of Heinrich's wives would have been Anna's mother, it is most likely that Anna was in her teens or early twenties at the time that her baby was born and therefore, she is more likely to have been Anna Maria Lauber's daughter.

Illegitimate child: Anna Jegel.
